has anyone read lord of the flies by william golding? i have to write an essay on it based upon this question:

Kinsley Amis commented that Lord of the Flies is, "terrifying and haunting." Use references from the novel to support whether or not you agree with this statement?

Lord of the flies is about some unexpecting creature. I think it is haunting because it look hideous, the title of the book?.. I'm not sure what it actually asking, but I read it like a year ago.. Sorry, hope you get the help. sad.gif

It's terrifying and haunting because it depicts the realities of society. Also, just think about little English school boys on an island by themselves, who in turn, desire to kill each other off. Furthermore, did you realize that the Lord of the Flies is actually in all of them and could be considered Satan himself? Hmm. I don't know what more to say - does that help? Maybe if I think about it some more, I'll edit this.

Terrifying because as you read, you realize that nearly anyone can be driven to cruelty and the depths of cruelty that some people can sink to are horrific. It's haunting because of the juxtaposition of innocence and survival. As far as supporting content, Piggy will supply most of your examples for 'haunting', I can't remember any specifics though, it's been a LONG time. It's an easy book to read though, unlike many classics. Good luck.

I wrote a paper on this for AP English last year.

I only read the first half of the book. (What can I say? I was a senior, accepted to college, it was spring, it was nice out, it was lacrosse season...)

I read a few critiques of it to figure out how it ended. Then I wrote a paper on it.

I got a 98%.

Moral? Um...always read the book, and do your homework. But if you can't (because it is spring, after all...) just get the gist of it, and then form an opinion and write the paper.

It is a good book, though. Really depicts the horrors of society.

It's terrifying in how close to reality it is (come up with some examples here) and it's haunting because it reflects our society and how it may become. Just draw lots of parallels between the book and our society, eg. like a character representing diff. ppl in our society.

It is terrifying and haunting. Basically, being on the Island turned GREAT kids into kids who were willing to do ANYTHING because they were desperate. Kids killed kids. They were forced to kill animals because of food. They lost the innocence that all kids have because of those things. It's definitely disturbing.

I mean, did you read the end?! how much worse can kids get?
It's not terrifying just because of what they did physically, but how they are emotionally. They're not even kids anymore. They crave power, control, and flock to evil because being on the island drove them insane.
