Here's an easier step, don't buy one.
Way to be constructive, you guys.
Maybe look towards resetting the iPod or restoring it.
To reset it, you go to the main menu of your iPod, then go to Settings, then go to Reset All Settings. That's how you do it on my 3rd generation iPod, anyways. This will change al the settings to the way your iPod was when you bought it. May not do much, but a place to start.
You can restore it by going to the Start Menu (I'm assuming you're on Windows) then go to Ipod, then the Ipod updater. You can restore it and it will wipe everything off it. Many times this fixes problems.
Just trying to be of help to you. You also look at the official iPod support page at
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/. The iPod Lounge at
http://www.ipodlounge.com has some forums that offer pretty good help with your iPod.
