Oh no beware all the "goth kids"! Fact of the matter is, Hot Topic ain't "gothic" nor "punk" nor "emo/hardcore/screamo/metalcore/grindcore...etc."
Hot Topic is mearly (as I quote Jack Black) "The Man" sending his little reporters everywhere taking detailed notes of kids at big-name bands, as well as local, shows.
There is nothing "punk" about spending $75 on bondage pants with 2 foot wide leg openings and 15 useless zippers. Then buying a Simple Plan or, dare I say, GOOD CHARLOTTE shirt and calling yourself a "PUNK." Your not a punk, nor are you different than any of the kids walking out of Aeropostale or Abercrombie. As many people shop there as any other popular store in the mall. So while your "going against corporate America by spending $150 on one outfit", THE MAN is raking in just as much moola from American Eagle or The Gap.
In the meantime, a TRUE punk spends roughly $10 on his outfit. Now you may be wondering why his superior brain is saving the $140 he probably doesn't have in teh first place. This is because these guys go to places such as GoodWill and other thrift stores and spend a few bucks (and yes, I do mean about $3-4) on a pair of jeans, then another $2 on a T-shirt. Then they go home, whip out the sewing machine, and taper the legs and up the rise (cause unlike you, they don't wanna look like they took a huge load in their pants) and throw on some grommets, studs (Hot Topic charges $5 for a pack of 10 studs that will rust in a week. Studs$Spikes charges $6 for a pack of 100 rustproof/stainless steel studs.) and a few D-Rings and snaps and make some bondage straps. Then you have a perfectly good pair of pants that costly you less than a pair at Wal-Mart, but that you could sell for a good $40 if your heart desired.
Consider the Sex Pistols, the pioneers of teh snarling, angry, snot nosed Anarchy-Punk of the 70's. They didn't pay $100 for their leather jackets or bondgae pants or anything of the sort. They literally pulled their clothes from the garbage. They put safety pins on their shirts and pants not to look cool, but because they couldn't afford belts. They went to sex shops and bought bondage straps and buckles so their pants would fit around their knees. Then THE MAN made it a fashion scene which pisses off Johnny Rotten to this day (for more info watch The Filth and The Fury)
Now about the gothic scene. First off, Slipknot ain't gothic, Evanescence ain't gothic, My Chemical Romance ain't gothic, Cradle of Filth ain't gothic (they are black metal), even The Misfits ain't gothic (for the record, they were horror-punk). True gothic bands were such as Joy Division, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, H.I.M. (to a certain degree) and even the Doors could fall under this category. And wearing all black doesn't made you gothic, as some goths are are even known to wear all white or neon/UV reactive clothes. While it is true that most have a facination with death , in a morbid sense, it does not mean that they all "wanna die and I cut my wrists just to show all my friends that way they
THINK I'm a depressed youth and thus I get more attention =D" Your not depressed, your just an attention-slut.
For all the emo/hardcore kids, lay off all the straight leg crap and if you want some good fitting pants buy some chick pants and peg the legs. Make sure you get a good size (for example if your a size 30 waist, buy a size 4-7 in girls. Don't go wear your girlfriends size 0s or 1s cause, unless your package was delivered extra-small, you'll be hurtin in the morning. I hope this clears up lotsa things for you.
In conclusion,
FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS SHOP HOT TOPIC!
It's all true! me and a friend were talking about this last night. at our school so many of the "punks" dont even think twice about not talking to "preps" Just because of clothing but really they have no right because you spend almost the same amount of money on pants @ hot topic as they do at Abercrombie or Hollister. Do I like it there yes...But! For me it's the only place to get good Band Tees around here! Also to quote the Filth and THe Fury as he did Punk was very much a do-it-yourself kinda thing!
