Well to sum it up with no spoilers, there is basically a battle between light and darkness.

There are descendants of these warriors of dark and light.

The original dark angel person thingy is called Dark. The light is called Krad(backwards of dark)
Some battle bewteen these two and stuff, and some angst.

Oh yea, the person in the avatar is turning into Krad.

But I heard DN Angel was good. But I haven't seen it yet haha. I will watch it once I finish One Piece (no, not the Cartoon Network one, the actual Japanese one!). :P

For a second I thought the avatar might've been from Escaflowne or Earthians or something..

actually Krad is backwards 4 Dark (it makes sense too!!) And yes they do use this name in the japanese version. only how they pronouce it, thats different!
Dark--Daku, and Krad--Kurado (In japanese they hardly pronounce the vowels, so the u, and the o, are like silent) Japanese is very easy to learn peoples!! ARIGATO GOZAIMASU!!!

it was alright i disliked the ending.
i think the manga is so much better. its taking forever for it to come out though
