I think that it should be manditory..well it is at mine..I'll have to take atleast 2 years of a foreign language at school next year anyway.

But I don't see why you WOULDN'T want to take another language. It would help prepare you for the business world in the future..and it would help to be able to communicate with other people in your job and everything.

i agree with kristin! why wouldnt you wanna learn a new language

i've been doing spanish for nearly 4 years, and im gonna start german next year. lovin it.

but yes, i think spaish is, or soon wil be essential in teh Us, antherefore should be mandatory

there are more hispanics in the U.S. that black people now so yea i think that language should be mandatory for every high school student. in other countries they have to learn english so yea...

I'm not gonna get into all the, "Well it's a cool language" stuff so yeah. I'm taking it and yeah i like it. It's fun to confuse my friends with it. I think it should be mandatory still like it already is. anyway we can't really change the school rules unless we do this whole pettition thing and get it to the Super.

I think it should be manditory in schools, especially if you live in the United States were there is a cornecorpia of cultures everywhere. It'll be fun learning a new language, and you can FINALLY communicate with someone you maybe couldn't have before in the past.

I just hate that the requirement year for language for the school I'm applying to ( people say I'm a shoe in, that's why I'm stating this.) is two full years. Four Semesters.

I could be doing something more productive.

It makes sense in Canada for English-speaking students to learn French, because it's the other official language of Canada. It's mandatory up to eighth grade, and onwards you can choose to take a language or not (depends on whether or not you want to get into college). Even though it makes sense, I don't really think that French should be mandatory. It's not like ALL of us are going to stay in Canada and work in Montreal. In fact, I laugh at the notion.

I think that it's a good idea to make some sort of language mandatory throughout elementary and high school. However, this shouldn't be restricted to just one language, because students can have different career choices. If the student is forced to take one specific language, the skill could become trash if it's not used in a right environment.

My point is, the more languages you know can equal to more success in your career. Schools shouldn't restrict students to just one language, because it could become worthless.

I agree spanish should become a regular course..unless ur going to be living in a northern state or hawaii, then i think u should know spanish... it doesnt have to necessary be spanish..i think ppl should know more than one language other than english..

I took a language for 3 years because we had to. Then for the last 2 years we got to decide if we wanted to do language or not. Majority of people didn't. I don't think it should be mandatory, should be to the individual if they want to learn another language and to be honest. In them 3 years of learning french. I only know a few words whistling.gif School's a bad enviroment for learning that kind of stuff.

this is a good topic.

right now i have mixed feelings about it. like i know there are a lot of spanish people and some of my language involves very simialar words to the spanish language. but since there are so many different kinds of races here in america it dont think it would be fair. i mean just spanish. like i took spanish for 3 years and i will tell you this i dont remember a lot about it. like i dont think all of us will remember what we learned . and we dont even talk fluently enough for spanish people to understand us.

i think the people that come to the US should learn english cause it would be so hard for us to understand them especially coming from a different country. and it would enable us to understand them. i will post up more of how i feel about this when i get home right now im at school.

i think that it should be mandatory because i think that people said that learning a foreighn language helps with other class' grades. _unsure.gif
at my school, we have to have at least 2 credits (4 semesters). i have no problem with it but others flip out! wacko.gif

as far as mandatory goes, no, i don't think that it should be required to learn a second language during the course of your education, although most schools do require it anyways. however, i love spanish! my mom learned it in school and went on to get a masters in the language so i've grown up speaking it. i love the way it flows off your tongue and it's nice to get a touch of a different culture. my family travels a lot, so it comes in handy also. i think that children get a lot out of taking other languages in school, and it really exposes you to the outside world. but, i strongly think that it should be something you enjoy. i love spanish - the language and the culture - but if i didn't like it, i would not only dread going to class, but in no way would i be enthusiastic about speaking it. therefore, the fun is somewhat withdrawn from it and speaking the language becomes more of a chore than a hobby. learning to speak another language should be a positive experience for any and everyone who attempts to do so, hence it shouldn't be required in our systems of education.

well i think its only nessessary if you're planning to move to France or Mexico or what ever language you're studying or else why bother learning it?

First off, why the hell do you keep bringing back debates?!

Secondly, why learn it?! Because many people are coming to the United States from, you guessed it, MEXICO. With the #of people who are working in the U.S./the world who don't speak english, it would be kind of helpful to be bilingual.

In school, studying a language should be mandatory
However, you should be able to choose which language you want to study
In high scool everyone was forced to study French
Why should students be forced to study French of all languages
spanish is more useful (4th most widely spoken in the world,
Spoken in over 20 countries)
Students should be able to choose, study several if they wish
Also schools should begin teaching small children a foreign language from day one to develop their linguistic skills from a young age so they can rapidly reach a level of fluency in that language

At my high school, you had to take at least two years of a foreign language in order to get a special certification from the state so that you could attend state colleges. All the state colleges in my home state prefer students that have taken at least 2 years of foreign language and some even require that you take at least two or more years of one before they'll accept you.

I took my two years of Spanish, I speak a bit but not enough to hold a convo. Would've taken three but I got booted from Spanish 3 for arguing with the teacher. I know bits of German and Norwegian from the music I listen to, and I learned a bit of Portugese from an internet friend.

I don't think that Spanish will replace English in the US any time soon. I DO think that it is necessary for all citizens to have at least a basic command of Spanish so that they can communicate with the community of Spanish-speaking peoples. Most other countries in the world require their students to study English in addition to their native tongue from the start. I think that if Spanish classes were implemented at the elementary level in public schools, that children would be better able to learn and master the language. My youngest niece, who's in second grade, starting learning Spanish last year and now has about a 100 word vocabulary.

As far as middle and high school Spanish and other foreign language courses, I don't think that they do a whole lot of good unless the students have been taking them all along throughout their education. All most people really get out of high school courses is the basics, like numbers, letter, colors, and few common words. Commnuicating effectively with non-Americans is a common problem for those of us who were born and raised in the good ol' US of A.

Well, at least in my highschool it's not manditory. ermm.gif I don't think it's necissary but definatly a great quality to have.
