does anyone know the origin of masquerade ball or how it was formed/what type of people attend/etc. I'm writing a poem that compares life with a masquerade ball. Thanks.

I believe the balls came to the Venetian around 1500s (I don't recall the exact year). I remember reading somewhere that they were a carnival, of sort, and spread widely because there was a lack of entertainment. After a while, the rich began organizing them into masquerade balls. All sorts of people attended the public masquerades, but there were private ones where only the higher class are invited.
