With Hellboy, Guillermo Del Toro lovingly recreated panels from artist/creator Mike Mignola's comic book stories and brought them to vibrant life, setting a new benchmark for adaptations that respect their source material. With Sin City, however, co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have done more than just recreate the brutal chiaroscuro of Miller's stark post-modern noir artwork, they've captured the essence and the aesthetic of Basin City (as much a character as Marv or Hartigan) and brought its universe and characters to a stunning three-dimensional life. And unlike Hellboy, which suffered from a weak, confusing script, Sin City weaves a Pulp Fiction-esque narrative which snakes through the dark streets and crooked alleyways of this hellish metropolis like a fever dream.
In short, Sin City delivers a blistering ballet of bullets and blood, dames and danger at every turn. It's a kinetic masterpiece of pop culture for the new millennium (and a case could be made that this was the movie that CGI was invented for).
Everything works here. From Rodriguez's cinematography and editing, to the seamless direction (no mean feat when you consider Robert co-directed with Miller and Quentin Tarantino joined the mix as "Special Guest Director"), to the spot-on casting. The script gives Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro plenty of opportunity to chew the scenery – and they do, especially Rourke, who, despite having his mug buried under a thick layer of gruesome latex, delivers one of the best performances of his career and steals the show as Marv, the giant thug with a broken heart. The ladies hold their own, too. Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Brittany Murphy and Jaime King are all great in their roles, particularly Dawson as machine gun-wielding Dominatrix/Hooker-Godmother Gail. And kudos to Elijah Wood (proving there is life after Hobbits) and Nick Stahl who deliver contrasting performances as vile villains, the ultra-creepy Kevin and the disgusting Yellow bastard, respectively.
Sin City is smart, stylish, sexy and sick. It's also violent and funny. Certainly not a film for the whole family, but for those of us who enjoy our movies rated R, this flick kicks the head and the gut like a mule

i've seen it. bloody...yes. but it is sort of a way it is similar to a comic book, and, comic books are like that....
well maybe because the movie was based off on a graphic novel written by Frank Miller

Everything came straight from the comic.

Frank Miller really wasn't a co-director on this film .... Robert Rodriguez just wanted to give him the credit which he deserves.
There was actually a big controversy with Frank Miller's director credit. Robert Rodriguez wanted to credit him so badly that he withdrew from the Directors Guild so that he could. The Directors Guild wouldn't allow Frank Miller the director credit.

I have only recently seen the movie in Naples Fla (Its not released in the UK until June!!).
It combines action and dialogue which perfectly mimics comic book fantasy, even to the portrayal by Mickey Rourke who although he had his own features hidden under an amazing prosthetic (perhaps to mask the awful & disfiguring plastic surgery he had) gives a film stealing performance.
But Jessica Alba as Nancy. Now she is one hott chic. Although the original comics portrayed her part as fully nude, Rodriguez gave her the option not to strip and I for one am glad she didn't. Her scene in the bar with Bruce Willis a-la Christina Aguilera was fantastic. Even my wife said it was hott!!
Incredible sets, innovative use of modern technology, lighting, shadow and colour, outstanding costumes, characters with depth and moments of humour skillfully intermingled with the graphic violence. Plus the joy of witty dialogue unheard of since Pulp Fiction.
Modern cinema in all its gutsy, blistering and brutal glory.
But 6 people left....not to return. Perhaps Kevin was waiting for them outside.

finally watched this movie today. I loved it. Absolutely
adored it, especially the beautiful colourizations - my favorite was of Becky (Alexis Bledel)'s eyes. And Gail (Rosario Dawson) was absolutely gorgeous.

there was too much gore and hookers. 1. Only 11 year old queers think that.
2. Then you have problems.
3. Don't see the movie if you are to imature to handle the source material.

i thought it was spectacularly well done
and the fact that it was in black and white only incredibly enhanced the rare few things that actually were in color.
lots of gore and boobies, but so what? it was rated R and the black and whiteness took away a little of the bad effect of gore and boobies so that made it a little better

You
thought it sucked. There's a difference between that, and actually sucking, and quite a large one.
Frank Miller is one hell of a writer, and he does his own drawings for the comics ( yes, it was a comic before it was a movie. It was even said that it could never be made into a movie, because of that reason, but it was done and it was done well! ).
It's very, very, very well written, and they kept the same black and white comic book feel, and also threw in some other comic book type elements like color in certain places to place emphasis on certain things, and little things like that.
I especially liked the voice-over narration, it was a large part of the comic, and there is no subsitute for it.
The second movie is coming out, and will be based on earlier stories, so it will have some of the characters that may have died in the other movie
I've read all of the comics, and they're just some of the best ever, written better than most literature of today, not only limiting it to comics.
I enjoyed the movie very, very, much.

The coolest thing about that is it was filmed in color, then transferred to high-quality black and white (simple to do, since it was shot entirely digitally), which means the animators/sfx people could selectively bring out the true colors of the shot. It's an awesome technique.
