"He flunked school" ?? that's not a good reason to explain why he was a failure. and that part you quoted from lAzN YiN YanGl is in the book. although i'm not sure if that's really the answer, but it's probably is because he always wanted protect all the innocent things and people. There were many innocent "things/people" mentioned in the book, like the ducks from the lagoon in Central Park, Phoebe, Allie, all the children, etc. And he hated how all the adults were phonies so he (my teacher said) "alienated or isolated himself from the adult world."
so yea.. read the book. it's a good book, you'll get it.
