ahh i remember reading this book in the 8th grade! its been a loong time and i honestly, dont remember much of it.. its not a great story and i understand why you don't understand it :P

you should go to www.sparknotes.com + pinkmonkey.com. i highly recommend sparknotes.com though. they're REALLY good with giving you chapter summaries of the books and its more organized. they help a LOT. :)
