Feet of Idols

On these podiums of concrete stand
Standing high, with eyes staring into oblivion
An oblivion few can see
Even less, achieve
These heros from our past, live on
In these concrete statues
Across the plains and hills of the world
For all to adore
They created the foundations of our present
The one in which we live
And the one we strive to improve
Yet I realize they are nothing now
They have left these plains of life
Non-existent even as the undead
However they’ve written themselves in the books of history
As the favored sons and daughters of Time
Built along these roads
Casings of concrete and other various materials
Imitations of our predecessors never to move
Follow their foot steps as we may
But these footsteps we will never relive
Merely retell in the ways of books
And to the realization I have come
None achieved their recognition in life
Through the course of time
For their due rewards have been received
In their death
When nothing matters, when feeling leaves their hands
Souls of the glorious depart
Only in death are we recognized
With statues standing still
Much like their bodies lay forever still
Until they are forgotten

No, not quite, but it's based on the same idea. However, I wrote this an entire year if not more before we heard about that quote. Coincidence, yes, but not the way you're thinking of.
