These are actually both correct. The 1st one means "He made the basketball team"...she used it correclty buddy...trust me, mom & pops are Mex., and I speak Spanish, plus a bit of Italiano

The 2nd one means "He is in the basketball team" which can pass for "He made the basketball team"...but if N E thing, the 1st one's correct. Just take my word.
Oh yeah, "hizo" isn't only the passed tense 4 "to create", it's also passed tense for "to make"...don't "create" & "make" have the same meaning in English N E way? Well I hope I've been of help
