It's not so much homework, but I need help on choosing a passage. Here's the prompt.

"Pick a passage from a book or poem that has changed the way you view the world intellectually. Describe the passage or quote the poem. Take a few lines to explain teh passage, and then explain how it has changed the way you view the world."

Posts some excerpts from a novel or some poems, will you? _smile.gif

"Comrade, I did not want to kill you. . . . But you were only an idea to me before, an abstraction that lived in my mind and called forth its appropriate response. . . . I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony—Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?"

- Erich Maria Remarque All Quiet on the Western Front

Passage enphasizes the sameness among ourselves despite the abstract ideas of "nationalism" and "patriotism".. I think it falls in nicely with the whole war scenario going on right now. It made me realize that soldiers are only enemies under the abstraction of the term "enemy" and that our enemies on the battlefied and war are human too... only seperation is the artificial divisions set by the country and the leader.

I'm not in AP English though, not a junior yet. So my insights are errrr not useful sad.gif

you have to apply to ap english? i said i want to be in this class next year, so wa la, i will be

We get recomendations =/ I don't know mine yet but it's coming =/

i think i may have to have recommendations, but thats alright because the ap classes i want to take are with the teachers who kind of like me. my history teacher doesnt like that i pay approximately no attnetion to him, but i have a 98 in there, so he cant deny me AP. and in language arts, theyve combined AP and IB for us for next year, and my teacher grades really hard, so hell put us all in reguardless of our grade (because my grade kind of sucks, but he recognizes that i do try...most of the time...and am not a complete dumbass)

oh, while he could surely, he wouldnt deny me of it, because hes a nice old man whos going a bit senile and forgets that ive done something wrong

not to mention that i have a slacker class (its a pre-ib class of gifted students, but were taking it a year after we wouldve if wed done ib, which we didnt because were lazy. so still a high level class, with smart people, just they dont care much about their grades) so he appreciates the fact that i can answer all his questions without paying attention

.. I'm here. I'm not fond of the one novel that an excerpt has been taken from though. I may use that for my friend's app though, since I'm writing for him since I want him to take AP English with me.

.. and the rest of the posts in here don't really help me at all, so I.. didn't respond. ..

*Runs to dig in her stash of neat books*

Something that I remembered from The Once and Future King:

"Power is of the individual mind, but the mind’s power is not enough. Power of the body decides everything in the end, and only Might is Right."

Now in the book, this quote is significant because it makes Authur think about the relationship between power/strength and morality (right and wrong)... etc. I actually, enjoyed the parts of the novel where he is learning from Merlin.

This quote and those that has to do with Authur's understanding of "Might" and "Right" didn't really changed how I see the world intellectually, it just made think about the differences between action and words. Taken out of context, the quote reminds me of the saying that people "talk the talk but do not walk the walk". You know, things that we think about are powerful. Our imaginary can surpasses any boundary because fantasy is limitless and dreams are vast. However, if imagination and dreams are shackled to a body without strength, or vigor and enthusiasm to make them a reality, then such a mind and body combination is useless.

^^^ That's close to what I have as notes for the book... that was a while ago...

Here is another one that's highlighted:

"Why can’t you harness Might so that it works for Right?… The Might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can’t neglect it."

The idea seems to suggest that Might is immoral and needs to be redirected to aid Right, in other words, the moral things....

Yes well, I that's my contribution. Good luck!

I think I will use the former quote. _smile.gif
