Is it wrong to listen to Marilyn Manson if you're a christian?
racoons > you
Feb 1 2005, 01:52 PM
i cant speak from a christian perspective, but i can speak as someone who has made a fairly fdetiled study of the Bible at school, and i feel equipt to speak about the ethos of the religion, even if i dont beleive it.
actually having said that, i dont particularly feel like a long post, so ill keep it short
ye si think its fine, because without experiencing alternative views and styles of music, no one can ever learn what it is they truly believe.

i went to some thing my church put on to help teens learn about god and what we should do in order to get to heaven and according to them, yes, it is bad.

i personally don't agree with them because i don't think that the music you listen to should decide wheter you get into heaven or not. go ahead and do what you want. god wants you to be happy.

remember, this is my viewpoint, im not debating, im just putting my opinion.
my viewpoint: yes, it is wrong.
why? it would offend me quickly... i dont want to listen to songs that offend my religion. could possibly harm my faith if i even listen to just one of his songs.
but here's sort-of a twisted example of that:
Utada's new American debut is Exodus 04.
Track 01 is Devil Inside (a club hit that actually made Number #1 in the Billboard Club Hits). I listened to it for a while and it kinda harmed my faith (i dont wanna listen to it anymore).. I don't know what religion Utada is.. but here's more.. 2 tracks later, to Track 03, the song "Workout," she sings "I was dancing with a born-again Christian."
That gets me confused, but my question to Utada is that: Is she promoting the Devil?
Yes, I understand that some rappers put the word "devil" on their songs. Here's the verses to hear what Utada sang.
Devil Inside:
Maybe there's a devil or something like it inside // Maybe there's a devil or something like it inside of me // Devil or something like it inside // Maybe there's a devil somewhere really deep inside me // Devil inside of me // Jealous angel deep inside me
The Workout:
I was talking with a born-again Christian // "So what's it like to start life all over?" // He said "Amen, //I feel like I've been rediscovering the tomb of Tutankhamen." //
Confusion right there.... i deeply respect Utada's singing, but sometimes, that kind of stuff can confuse me.

I don't really comprehend how this can 'Harm your faith'...
If you were a parent, adivising your child, no, You shouldn't let them listen to Manson. It might make them go into a cult. That is how parents can be. We all have them (Well, most. Sorry if I offend anyone with that.) And they are going to look out for 'Our Well-being'. Which is their version of 'keeping us safe'. These days, there is more 'bad' influences than before, so it is going to be hard hiding them from your child.
So- It may be bad for people to listen to it if the are in a religion, but I don't think so.

I kind of meant...weak in your faith. As in you weren't an exactly "good" Christian to begin with. Anyway. Yeah.
I just don't think that music affects your faith, unless it's sending some sort of subliminal message in the lyrics or music or whatever. I think that if you're a Christian that strongly believes in God, believes in the things He says, then I don't think music will affect the faith.

In 1998, on DMX's second album 'Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood,' Marilyn Manson did some rather eerie vocals on a song called The Omen (Damien II). The song was about the temptations of the devil and as DMX emceed his way through a split personality, the overall point of the song was, in perspective, to rebuke and make the right choices. Ironic, eh?

Christians are to make no provision for temptation. if you're tempted to ritually slaughter pigs, or woship this fagg, then yes it would be wrong.
you need to be well grounded before you go stand in a hurricane. Remember it's not the 3-digit-mph winds, it's the stuff it's blowin.
FYI marylin manson does worship the devil. He was baptized in the church of satan. we know for a fact that he atleast did at one point and his fruits are still just as rotten as they were then.
and by saying just because he does something, doesnt mean that i do it. is a lie. if you buy his cd's or listen to him on the radio you are advocating whatever it is that he is doing. money in his pocket is money in his pocket.
as christians we cant condemn this man for his blatant blaspheme. we need to fall on our knees and pray for him. it's not for us to judge, but to love. we can tell when someone is stumbling, so why cant we help them up? why dont christians act like christians?

I need to examine what the word Christian means, eh? Here's a newsflash for you, not everyone is going to share your same views or beliefs, Christian or not. If I'm a Christian that makes sense to me? It makes no sense to me because I don't have my ass on my shoulders and I'm not going to condemn someone who doesn't believe what I believe.
What you aslo have to understand is that not everyone believes in God or heaven and hell. Yes the proper name for the non-believers of Christian, Muslim or Jewish faiths is 'pagan,' but its just another unfair classification of others who don't believe what you do. How can you be so narrow-minded to judge those who listen to Marilyn Manson? Who are you to judge?

Everyone in this thread should read his book: The Long, Hard Road out of Hell. Very Entertaining. Expels alot of myths...
Marilyn Manson is a modern Satanist. There are many rumors floating around, but he has stated this. He also knew Anton LeVay personally, and thought of him as somewhat of a father figure. He never had ribs removed or raped anyone on stage. He dosent worship the devil (Yeah, Modern Satanists define satan as a concept, not a being). So this is my take on Christianity and Manson..
Of course Christians can listen to him. Anyone can listen to him....it's in any human's power. However I find it quite silly that a christian would find meaning in his lyrics, look up to him, or call themselves a "fan." It would be quite contradictory. I've heard christians say "I like his music, but I don't like him/his lyrics." It seems that if you're a christian, that statement would make most sense. If that's the case? Great...I think his music is great, but if you're a christian, I don't know how wide the definition of "fan" can get...
I'm an athiest, and no one's stopping me from listening to that cheery Christian worship music. But, for the most part, I'm not going to listen to something I don't agree with. Would it be wrong of me to listen? It wouldnt be WRONG, but to me it would seem contradictory...and silly. I would only imagine that a christian would feel this way listening to Manson...
It's only music, but however, if you take to heart the meaning, that's something more..

Listen to him if you want, im sure some christians will hate you for it (http://www.johnnyleeclary.com/manson.htm) this website is so full of lies it made me feel physically ill! I dont understand why you would want to be a christian and a Marilyn Manson fan tho, if you want to understand him you have to listen to/read his lyrics and im sure many would find them very insulting.

On a differnt note, nothing is "wrong" or evil and you aren't gona turn into the devil if you disagree with what some people think. You should do what you want, dress how you wana dress an be who you wana be. Im myself so i listen to marilyn manson and a hell of a lot of other bands, some which would cause mass christian suicide if they ever heard them lol. Overall Marilyn Mansons message is supposed to appeal to those who feel that mankind/religion/society had failed them and it inspires many of them to be themselfs and to live happy lives where they aren't forced to conform and be like everybody else. Trust me, you aren't going to go to hell if you listen to manson regardless or what others say.

Is it wrong to listen to Marilyn Manson if you're a christian?
No. It's not wrong. Those who might see it as wrong would be conservative christians, and they believe what it says in the bible and it says nothing about Marilyn Manson in there, does it now?
Marilyn Manson is satanist, meaning he believes in a religion that has ideas completely different from the christian ideas. On top of that, satanism is also about dissing christianity, because Satanists think Christianity is a bad religion and that it's wrong to believe it.
But Marilyn Mansons MUSIC however, actually has a point you should hear. A minimal part of his songs are satanistic, as in him singing about his religion. That's just a little part. Most of his songs are about great points that we need to know, things I, atleast, agree with, and that we need to be aware of. Like the fact that he thinks America is brainwashing us and scaring their citizents to get money or cooperation or whatever it is they want.
He has points and opinions, only a small part of them are satanistic. If you agree with his views and like his music, or just like his music, then listen to him!
I keep seeing these questions. Should I listen to rock even though I'm christian? Can I wear my black clothes or be a punk, or shouldn't I because of god?
You have to give yourself a break here. I'm sure god doesn't mind if you are who you want to be. I get that you shan't sin and all, but you ARE allowed to wear the clothes you like and listen to the music you want to listen to and have your own opinions!
Besides, if you are strong in your faith, as you probably are since you ask this, you shouldn't ask this, because if a simple song or style can make you doubt your beliefs, they aren't very strong. Think about that. It's all up to you, and Marilyn Manson is just a brilliant singer who happens to sing about his opinions and dress the way he want.
People must stop being scared of him or hating him for being who he wants to be, being awake and being a genious. Sheesh!
Just an example to prove my point:
I love rock and punk. Like Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. I wear black clothes and spikes, because of the music I listen to. But I chose to do that, see, no one dresses me in the morning, I do it all by myself! It's my choice to be like this. I didn't become like this as in because of the music, whether I liked it or not, I HAD to! No, I chose it.
My boyfriend, he listens to some of the same bands as I do, and lotsa others, in the rock and punk and metal genres. He is completely "normal" looking, he likes to wear a shirt and blue pants. Because he chose to do that! He's even christian, one of the most christian persons I've ever known! It has nothing to do with the music you listens to, it's about what you yourself choose.
See?

Why are people still up in arms about this topic??? It's such an overrated one. If your faith is is threatened by his music, or you think that he's a pervert, then don't listen to him. Simple enough.
No one is going to force you to listen to his music, wear a shirt with him on it, sit through a concert of his....People choose to do those things. His fans (myself included) choose to support him. We're not part of a cult or anything. We just like his music and agree with his views. That's all.
A lot of his music is about things that he's been through in his life. Some of it is less than godly, but a lot of music is less than godly. You don't hear Manson (or any Atheist, Pagan, or Satanist artist) going around bashing Christians. That's because they've got better things to do with their time than to sit around and bash Christians. They let their music and art speak for theirselves. They let people decide whether or not the listen or look at them.
Make the decision for yourself. If you don't like it, fine. If you do, then great....being a Manson fan and a Christian is not bad, you will not go to hell, and more than likely, you will develop a more open mind because of it.
