How do they work?

I've heard people say they've made a layout using tables.
And I'm wondering what tables are.

Can anyone help me?

well im not exactly sure myself but there is a tutorial on tables which could probly explain it to you @ xpresshtml & @lisaexplains it all

But I need a more detailed explanation.
I have NO idea at ALL how tables work, and the xpresshtml site doesn't help much, and the Lissa site only helps with basics.

If there's anyone that can help give me a more detailed explanation of tables, I'd be grateful.
