That's a tough question.....when i was younger i always used to watch Micheal Jordan on tv and it has been etched permeantly in my mind that he def is the best athlete...but nowadays...oh gosh i dunno.....i really admire Scott Hamilton and Armstrong

I don't think there is a "greatest athlete" but there have definitely been people that have left lasting impressions of greatness. Pat Tillman for example...

statistically : Wayne Gretzky (he has more assists than anyone has points (points is assists + goals)
Tiger Woods maybe? he won all 4 major golf tournaments in one year.
but i think the overall greatest athlete was Muhammad Ali

for those who dnt know. thats what they called michael jordan. spike lee gave him that nickname.
he's the greatest. not only in basketball, he was the inspiration of alot of athletes playing today. and some of them dont even play basketball. he changed the game. his shoe alone hada big impact on fashion, and his drive and determination in the sport of basketball was something that every player in the league wanted. when someone said no, mike said yeah. and took something little such as the chicago bulls, and made them one of hte greatest teams in nba history.

Theres so many great athletes today and in the past... im gonna have to go with MJ............ Magic Johnson!
The man is truly magic... able to best Jordan in an NbA playoff game... that tells you something.
