My dad is a computer programmer for UL, UnderWriters labs, the biggets product tester in the US. Hes only seen 5 PCs in the 8 years hes been working there ever reach more than 2 GHz during its testing. The reason companies put 3.8 GHz processors so they can take more money from the consumer. Normal wiring in a computer cant transfer more than 800 MB at a time, lets alone 3 GHz. Computer companies are resorting to now having to seperate computers within one so they can split the processors to allow for greater use of it.
Your dad is a programmer, yet you don't know the difference between 3ghz and 800MB. Here's what you said in plan speak:
Normal wiring in a computer can't transfer more than 800megabytes at a time, let alone 3 GIGAHERTZ, notice a difference? Obviously not since you can't tell the difference between MB and ghz. Here's a quick run down on what's what, hertz, is the measure ment of how many calculations can be done a second, as such, 3 ghz denotes the ability to run 3 billion caculations a second, megabytes? That denotes the amount of space. So basically you aren't just comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing an apple to a monkey, that's what you've managed to do, and make a fool of yourself while doing so.
And your dad is obviously not using very CPU intensive programs. Just because he tests programs, it doesn't mean that he's used any CPU intensive programs. Turbotax uses a lot less CPU than say, Farcry. As I have said, you obviously have never used any programs that are CPU intensive. See, graphics rendering, highly system intensive games, and video compression. The splitting of computers is called clustering if you don't know.
I would definatly like to see you try and survive with a 1ghz computer for the next 3 years, then try and install any of what might be considered the latest and greatest games in 3 years, no doubt they'll be running really slow, that's assuming that the minium system requirements state that a 1ghz CPU is enough. Have you looked at the Sims 2 lately? Minium system requirements for that is 2ghz if you don't have a TL capable graphics card. Yea, I'm definatly sure they'd require that as the minimum if it only utalized 1ghz. That's great too, changing your story from 1ghz to 2ghz. First you say rarely to programs reach 1ghz, then you say 5 PC's ever reach 2ghz? What happened to the 1ghz mark? Did you ask your dad and get totally shot down?
Oh yea and regarding your comment about RAM. Do you even know why computers need ram? Let's just say multitasking benifits greatly from an increase in RAM. Let's see, I have 545mb of my 1gb of ram free, assuming we were to keep everything the same and remove 512mb of ram, how much ram would I be left with, by goly! I'd have 32mb of ram left! That's sure enough to do much. I could probably manage to open adobe photoshop! Then maybe one image! I'm sure that would be just swell!
Wait no, you're right. Having more CPU speed doesn't help at all. CPU manufactures are merely raising the speed to make our money. They are only pouring money into R&D to make it seem like they're coming up with new stuff, but really, they invented the 90nm creation process years ago and are just unvailing it now. We've been oblivious to it the whole time. The review and benchmarking sites are all pawns to these large corporations to brainwash us and turn us into money spending zombies. All the games that come out now, can be played on old old computers, but Intel and AMD are paying them to raise their minimum system requirements so they can sell "faster" chips. Forget better graphics, or rendering or more realistic physics which require more calculations, this stuff can run on our 233mhz PII except the CPU manufactuerer's don't want us to know that. It's a giant conspiracy! My 233mhz CPU could definatly handle the easy tasks of decoding HDTV since that's child's play. They merely recommend 2ghz processors for the heck of it. Yes, I totally agree with you now, you have another convert to your join you and fellow activist to stop this conspiracy.
Oh yea, in case you didn't notice, I was being sarcastic. I wouldn't normally put something like this here, but you know, just in case you didn't know.
