...but what put the stuff necessary for the big bang into play? I guess I just like to believe that maybe there were something that started it for kicks, an explanation for things not yet explainable. *shrug.

Then you're left with trying to explain what started God.

Yup yup. I don't know.

My mother's side of the family is Catholic... hardcore Catholic. My father's side of the family is filled with a bunch of Southern Baptists (which certainly made Sundays interesting growing up). My parents tried to reach a middle ground by experimenting with different non-denominational churches. After a while, I just got annyoed with the various interpretations of the "word." Then, life comes into play and I personally just couldn't fathom the idea of placing all of my hope and faith into something that I have no proof of. For the past year, or so, I had pretty much given up on religion, in general. Iraq had to be the straw that broke the camel's back (hahaha, camel, hahaha, Iraq, rofl).

What drove you, Nate or anyone else here to this point?

i was born catholic (which is another way of saying that i was intellectually raped before i even had the chance to develop critical thinking). my family was catholic. i went to church every sunday. i believed. i grew the f**k up. it involved a lot shit, not the least of which was realizing that people all over the world were dieing and f**king up and shit was going to hell and everything sucked for no reason other than there is no f**king reason shit just happens. of course, the story is more complicated and nuanced, but, i think anyone taking a stroll through a children's cancer ward and by the end of it can still be all, "well, at leas they'll have normal cell growth in heaven" is a f**king psychotic. in either case, it's all so clearly socially constructed (i.e. we want to maintain control and power) and humanely invented (i.e. we fear death so we invent ever-lasting life) that it is nauseating and embarrassing that anyone could ever believe any of it.

here is an alright reference before when i gave half a hoot.

It's cool, I'd be lying if I said that post surprised me. You see, having completed school on time, being on track with my life, knowing I'm going somewhere, I'm a lot less cynical than our boy Nate.

i have no idea what my cynicism has to do with you not being a scientific thinker, a skeptic, or an empiricist.

who wants to "be on track with life" anyways? that shit is for motivational posters and after-school specialsss: thumbs down, thumbs down!

It also lets me do what I want without worry of being in a financially tight spot later down the road for what I want to do. I'm sure you're fine with how you are, and I'm not one to judge, but I'm a different person with different habits/motives.

Science, no need for a reason. Religion is just magic tricks and lies.

No.
Tsukuyomi-No-Mokoto
I started out with being brought up on religion.
I was raised a christian and all that and to me most of the stories didn't hold water for me.
When i got into high school i studied other religions as well as the history of christianity.
So in my journey to find the "truth" and where we came from and all that jazz I studied Shintoism, Buddhism, Islam, and the other branches of christianity.

Basically after all that my view on religion has changed and i've strayed far from that paved road which leads to "salvation"

What I have to say is...
one if god created all of us why would he discriminate on everyone else and choose one group of people to be his chosen people.

Adam and Eve lived in the garden of Eden depicted as white and depiceted as the first two people.
If we're their children if I get married I'm marrying my sister then.
Now if you look at what happens with people born through insest you see that they are born with abnormalities.

Lets put it in perspective:

SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES

Religious Advancements

Atheism is actually the fastest growing "religion"

Religion is delusion used against the conceptual celestial fact of
death and used to reinforced "model" behavior

use science to prove this
Tung
Both Science and Religion are used as a form of social control.
Tsukuyomi-No-Mokoto
I just don't see how religion can explain everything that's been happened to the world as far as how it was created, the creation of life, cause we obviously weren't the first ones here.
KINGdinguhling
i dont see how science can explain everything either
Tsukuyomi-No-Mokoto
but it certainly can explain alot of things where as the bible has alot of questionable things in it.
Tung
If you combine Religion and Science you get

RELIENCE. loool.gif

Yes, you can rely on those two things to explain the universe.
brooklyneast05
RELIGION DOES NOT EXPLAIN THE UNIVERSE.

i never heard of that little reliance thing, did u just make that up.
Tung
I know I was just saying. I thought you knew I was an atheist JC lol.

edit: yeah I just made it up lol.

I can't believe you still remember that shit. You remember too many shit. stubborn.gif stubborn.gif That night though, I think I was just scared of getting caught, especially when the concert was at my University. Ain't risking getting kicked out of Uni over a $40 Relient K hoodie.

Do you have to prove that unicorns don't exist before you can disbelieve in them?
Tsukuyomi-No-Mokoto
the whole idea is we're told to believe in God and have blind faith in god

so what you're saying is to go my entire life putting my faith into something that's been written in a book. there are so many different versions of the book and so many different branches of the same one religion

science at least you see some results and you can have somethin to back up an idea

I already told you, having to prove something is irrelevant as well. Explaining this is like a inanimate object perceive things on a human level

Exactly, so I don't "need to prove there [sic] nonexistence even exists." You've just refuted your prior post for me.

We do not need proof for the nonexistence of Thor and Zeus and Apollo. There is no evidence for them or any other, so we can legitimately say that they do not exist.

I haven't been reading this, so i apologize if someone already mentioned what i am about to say.
Science can be proved correct, religion can't.
Tsukuyomi-No-Mokoto
science doesnt have all the answers
but does that mean if we don't have an answer we make up something to make up for what we don't know.

Religion i believe is formed through rebels because
if your a rebel you follow your own beliefs and through that you gather followers
the followers share the same beliefs and practices
thus creating "religion"
think bout it
religion everyone follows the same practice and beliefs
they follow through with things religiously
and so with that we call it religion.

Just wanted to throw this in (because what you said reminded me of it): Science tells how us how, but not why. It's in religion that people get the why (and ethics, right and wrong, and good and evil, etc.). Saying, though, that there is a great force that could not cease to exist (and is the cause of something, but has no cause) is something that I don't think I will ever understand.

lol no no, simple fellow. You keep thinking of opposites as two things. Eventually, any and all things eventually try to reach equilibrium of 1

As opposed to 2? Something has either attained equilibrium or it has not. If one component is out of sync, then it isn't harmonious.

yeah but all things have a tendency to go back to equilibrium
Reidar
Like you returning back to the same non sequitur. You've attained equilibrium, my boy.
Tsukuyomi-No-Mokoto
The idea that religion is the basis for laws and ethics and all that i find that to be a load of shit too cause if you think bout it.
Look at how our government was formed it's formed on basic things which are the same things written in the bible. but the things written in the bible as the ten commandments.
so are you telling me people have no common sense and they need to rely on a book to give them an idea as to how to live their life?

I'm not disagreeing with you, I just thought I would throw that reply out there. A lot of the problem (misunderstanding, maybe) that I have with people who always refer to holy texts is that they that feel the need to base what is morally right and wrong on scripture. Nothing is morally right or wrong just because someone (or something) says it is. But a lot of people and pick and choose which "commands" from the scripture that they want to follow.

i think science. because without no science there wouldn't be no religion. religion wouldn't have their rules without the knowledge they know from science.

lol otay, would you care to explain why? hahaa
codyfrijole2006
Science, by far. You're comparing disease to antibiotics.

Without Science total world population wouldn't be more than a few hundred thousand, most of whom would be looking for dinner under flat rocks. To quote someone whose name I've forgotten, life would be nasty, brutish and short.
Tung
I'm not defending Religion here (atheist here)

But science shouldn't be taken so in such high regards. Because of the social ideals that Scientists are smart, and know what they are doing, they have alot of people's respect. People will listen to them. That's why Science is used to manipulate and use as social control. I mean look at the flu shot situation. Scientists says you should get one, but in reality you don't even need it at all. Let's also go as far as Global Warming. Global warming is f*cken fake, but because scientists have said there exists one, people buy into it. Science is a tool for social control. Most of the time when you hear "Health" organizations, 9/10 times they are doing more harm than good. I'm just saying here, that you shouldn't take science as FACTS. Because science isn't always FACTS. It's more like socially accepted FACTS to socially control people's way of thinking and lives. don't get me wrong. science does indeed have legit facts and etc. but if you look at the bigger picture, than that's where i'm getting at.

/rant. rememeber, i ain't defending religion, cuz i got a /rant for religion too.
brooklyneast05
yeah but people who take science as fact have a basic misunderstanding of what science is in the first place.

but either way, i would way rather people put their fact title on gravity than on global floods ect ect ect ect for every scientific theory vs religious one

Lol so you actually believe Global warming is real? Yeah, when Al Gore released his book, many environmentalist were awed and believed him. After years though, there's been criticism of this Global Warming idea. Why do you think they refer to it as climate change. Come one, if you look at Earth's history in a geographical and climatic aspect, you will see a pattern. The fact of the matter is, we are currently in the middle of transitioning into another Ice Age. Global Warming is just another tool for social control.
