i think that if you are from the philipines, you are philipino! not asian.
avalon*
well it's like "are indian people asian?" if they reside in an area that is considered asia, then they are technically asian even though some people might not consider them to be.

If any debators want this thread moved, say so now.
pandamonium
people from india that are around asia on the southwest are considered asians also i dont see why we should be left out.
sweetxsimplicity
I only say that filipinos aren't asian to piss off this guy in the chatroom, because he's overly obsessed with asians, and he's filipino. =x
But, yeah, I guess they're considered asians. =]

QUOTE(Sumiaki @ Dec 27 2004, 1:34 AM)
Last time I checked, "Pacific Islander" isn't considered a continent. Filipinos are asians. I think people are getting two words confused, Oriental and Asian. Many people say that Indians are not Asian, although they are a part of Asia. They are asian, they are just not oriental. I really think this "catergorizing" is completely Bullsh*t. It's completely not necessary, it just adds confusion and promotes stereotyping.

you explained that very nicely thank you lol thats what i tried to say.

idk if this has been said on this topic (you expect me to read 5 pages??!! </sarcasm>), but are Iraqi's considered Asian, since it's part of Asia. i mean.. would you find it odd if an Iraqi said something like "blah blah, yah, i'm Asian. blah blah".

*two pages later*

... how is this debatible? how does this matter. did you seriously have a conversation like "i'm from the Philippines. i'm asian" "NO YOU'RE NOT! YOU TAKE THAT BACK!"? cause if you did, you're a goofball.
souldreamers
ahhh yes I consider Flips to be asian... mainly because most look asian! But most Flips are Catholic right? And for some reason I've always thought they had very interesting/cool names... sounds like hispanic names many times. Especially the last names. I always thought that Fillipino culture seemed more like Hispanic. The language, food, religion, names...

While it is a Middle Eastern country, the Middle East isn't a continent.
QUOTE(Wikipedia.org)
The term Middle East defines a general area, so does not have precise borders. It is generally taken to include: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the Palestinian Territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

All of those countries (except for Egypt) are on the continent of Asia. So if an Iraqi wanted to call himself Asian, he could.
someflipguy
^^^ Sure an Iragi can call himself Asian... Just don't let me hear it.. hehe j/k
xGlovex
i honestly have no idea. filipino's are filipinos.

Filipinas are South East Asian. They definitely look more Oriental like those of Thailand, cambodia and Burma than pacific islanders such as Polynesians and moari peoples
I always believed they emigrated from Asia
I would say Asian
`SWTWiNKLE3YES

i think phillipinos are asians BUT they are considered pacific islanders BECAUSE they dun fit into the stereotypic definition of asians: chinky eyes, very light skin, not looking like bruce lee or jackie chan...but in techicallity phillipinos are asians

xMayleex

I believe we are Asian... Geographically I mean...the Southeast ASIAN Treaty Organization was based in the Philippines, it is a member of the Association of Southeast ASIAN Nations, Manila will be playing host for this year's Southeast ASIAN Games, etc., etc.
lilliannnn

agirlnamed_aly
I've always considered myself Pacific Islander, but it doesn't really matter because us Flips get our own category whenever I fill something out. :)

Russia is part of Asia, are the Russians Asian?

Hawaii is part of America, Therefore Hawaiians are Americans, but still at the same time Pacific Islanders.

Filipinos are asians, due to geographical terms, but by culture, we are more paficic islander. Think back to the days of lapu lapu. he wore grass skirts, and g strings. no silk kungfu garments. my ancestors didn't wear rice hats. i dont use chopsticks. my eyes aren't slanty. my last name is fernandez not pang. i am an island boy.

Russia took over territory in Asia. Thats doesn't mean Russia is a part of Asia, it only means that part of Asia became part of Russia.

Well i am American, I'm not Mexican or Canadian, but I am certainly North American along with them. So why can't Filipinos be Pacific Islanders and also Asian? they go together logically.
emazing
I think they're Asian. (; Filipinos are awesome, too.

ummm i think dey are asians because they HAVE SMALL PENISES~!@

Dude, Fernandez is soo spanish. I hope you realize that. Anyway, I think ... if the spanish didn't come and take over the Philippines, the Philippines would be like most asian countries because a lot of asian people had inhabited the Philippines even before the Spanish came. These people came to the Philippines through ice bridges.

Also it doesn't really matter if he wore grass skirts or not - because we live in the same climate of those polynesia and micronesia and etc. thus we would wear the same clothing. But also, you can't label races/nationalities by what they wear. stubborn.gif
Ujio
There were ice bridges that went to the Phillipines?

I believe Filipinos are Pacific Islanders. Only geography makes it seem like we're Asian.

You're kidding right?

It's possible that the sea level was lower, and there was a LAND bridge, but certainly no ice bridges at the equator.

Actually, there is a theory that the Philippines was settled by Malaysians a long time ago when they came over in canoes.

Filipino is definitely Asian! If they're not asian, then they're not part of Asia.
xlauren73x
uhmm.. they are.. my best friend is filipino and although you can classify it as pacific islander it's still asian.. the philipines are in asia! it would be like saying someone was middle eastern.. they are still asian if the country they are from is in ASIA.
Unpredictable
Im Filipino..
We ( my family ) consider ourselves Pacific Islanders..
*shrug* its how i was raised..

Just because Filipinos don't have the small eyes doesn't mean that they aren't Asian. People often generalize that what makes you Asian are your eyes. That is not necessarily true. Look at Indians. India is part of Asia. They don't have the chinky eyes. Please realize that Asia is not just full of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese people. I am Filipino myself. To erase any confusion, I just consider myself as a Pacific Islander. Although, I do know that I am Asian because the Philippine Islands are in the continent Asia. Our ancestors were mostly from Malaysian descent. (again, not many Malaysians have chinky eyes although they are in fact, Asian.) We acquired our Spanish surnames when the Spaniards colonized the Philippines. We also got our primary religion, Catholicism, from the Spaniards. Before they colonized, we were mostly of Malay-Polynesian dialect. Think about it. Here's an example. In Tagalog, eye is mata. In Hawaiian, it is maka. In Tongan/Samoan, it is mata. But also, in Tagalog, shoe is sapato. In Spanish, shoe is also sapato.
