Well in class today we had a whole 2 hours on debating various topics. One topic was "Should people be responsible for creating technology?"
I'd like to know what you guys think. Please choose yes or no, not inbetween.

people are responsible for creating technology.
but that doesnt mean it is bad. technology is beautiful but now we are reaching a society were knowledge can be dangerous. think about it in a couple of centuries science can be perfect. there wouldnt be a need for anything like material items . everybody would know everything. society would be perfect. but we arent there. so who knows what the future can bring us with technology.
it has its pros and cons. but for me i love technology its advancing us.

So gun makers should be held responsible for anyone who is killed by a gun? If a person is shot by a gun because a hunter misfires, then that person should be able to sue the gun company?

No. People should only be responsible for using technology in harmful ways, not making it. You never know when technology is going to be harmful. Should the Wright Brothers be acocuntable for September 11?

who else would be responsible. well, i guess god. because my religion says that he created everything. so i guess, according to religion, he made technology, and we just discovered it and made it more advanced. i guess. i don't really know all about the whole god thing.

well people made the gun. people buy the gun. people shoot the gun. if the gun wasnt made that shot wouldnt of been fired ..... so yea pretty much people are responsible.
it pretty much works in a circle. people get blamed for killing people.
people made the technology. its a matter of using it correctly like ComradeRed said.

The excellent mathematician/writer
Vernor Vinge wrote an
excellent paper about his theory on the "technological singularity" that pretty much discusses this issue. Vinge hypothesizes that within the next 50 years or so, technology will be so powerful that humans will be capable of creating machines more intelligent than humans; and at that point, humanity as a natural construct will cease to exist, replaced by superintelligent human-like machines. It's an interesting read.

Well if we make a machine with instinct, emotion, and superhuman intelligence, they hey...we've all seen the movies, and we just may be destroyed, well since the beginning of time people have always been destroying people, but there is no stopping technology, it is human to wonder, and create, and wanting the world to have a better life...not that it always works

Of course we should be responsible for the consequences that technology brings. If you had a kid, you would be responsible for him/her right? We shouldn't create something that we can't control. It doesn't mean technology is always bad, it's just that we should think about the outcomes of the technology before we create it.

Can I choose yes and no? =)
Cause we are responsible for technology, but we aren't responsible for the things that we used to make technology. Everything we make comes from something natural. But I guess we're responsible for like..the virtual world (by itself)? Since that doesn't really require anything..
Please don't get mad at me for choosing in between.

I agree with ComradeRed.
Technology was created for a purpose, but when a person misuses that, they should be held responsible, not the maker. The maker's intentions were to make things more convienient, not terrorize people.

i agree with above.
a lot of technology was made for a good reason, yet a lot of people abused the technology and used it in a different purpose, and I dont think its man - kind's faults for technology, just the individuals who abuse technology in that way.
