what does that have to do with trying to deprive someone of their own ethnicity? so what if the newer generations are losing touch with their culture? thats what happens as time goes by. history fades. tradition fades. kids get americanized..

yeah so life in the phillipines is tough. your point? im sure everyone filipino that lives in america knows that by now. thats why they live in america. thats the reason they had to leave the phillipines. the longer they live here, the more theyre going to lose touch with. that doesnt mean theyre not filipino.

and please dont play the sympathy trump card. i lived in vietnam. yknow what happens in vietnam? yknow i'll just spare you the gruesome details. but i can tell you it's worse than the phillipines.. and you dont see me trying to spur the patriotism within my ethnic group on cb, and shunning anyone else who has lost touch with our culture..

why are u so ethno-centric ? im sorry dude but i just wanted to explain to you that, if your trying to be making this entry is utter nonsense , you dont have to prove that someone whos filipino is based on these questions . What makes me aggravated is when you have to imply that filipinos who start to live in America are Ashamed of their own country . Do you think its right to say that to every single Fil-American whove lived here... you just sound like a b*tcher and an attention whore .........Your critcizing everysingle person and you dont even know them......You dont think my parents are Proud?......hell yea they are ... we eat adobo and lumpia , my Dad is a President for a Filipino Association in New york , we talk tagalog , about Philippines and how we would like to vacate there , we do care about our family in the philippines , and with full genorosity , my parents strive to work whole -heartedly in order to help my family back there .......those are the things whats makes us close to our heritage.and makes us proud........ heck i wasn`t even born there and i knew almost all those answers .......

i also understand and know how you feel .....but 2nekked has a point . yes....its hard........how bout the 100+ other countries who is having trouble with corruption , violence , deprivation , depression and disease..... you strictly cant point out its just the Philippines......i would advise u to take a humantarium class if u go to college......because you would understand that everyone in the world has on-going conflicts.....and philippines is not the worst.....if u wanted things to change maybe u should start the action and be the reformist of the country...instead of b*tch and whine like a baby and posting Crap in a forum.......because it shows nothing that could help the Philippines....
..... take some action.......and please "think before you Speak"

I said I'd hold back, but...
---

______Okay, so you decided to make a topic measuring the qualifications of those who believe they are Filipino, and want to separate those worthy of claiming the title and those who are not. You form a little more than a dozen questions believing that if one were unable to sufficiently pass the 'test', they are basically deemed a traitor to their own culture.

______And this is the point you are trying to get through. You want Filipino-Americans to be aware of how far they have strayed from their culture. As for those who seem to, in your standards, be loyal to their homeland, you believe they deserve praise and reassure them that 'they will always be there for their other Filipino bretheren'. Which is pretty damn closed minded and biased. You mention that "bieng far away from your homeland does'nt affect you guys to forget the place you come from." I don't believe that your location measures your level of gratitude, loyalty and recognition for the country your culture is derived from. Just because you're in a different enviroment doesn't neccesarily mean you forget who you are and where you're from. What does it truly mean to be closely tied in with your culture? Is there a specific guideline we must follow to ensure that we don't 'betray' our heritage? I don't believe we need to go the extra mile, nor have to do things to prove who we are. Our culture IS who we are - we can never run away from it. And I'm sure that's one statement you can agree on, as you mentioned that "l have allot of relaives in america, some of my cousins dont want to be called filipino because of they are ashame that they are filipino." No matter how much we'd want to, we CAN'T stray far from our culture because there is always some cultural influence. Accept that and don't feel the need to 'test' people. It's an insult. People don't have to follow ANYONE'S standards in order to have pride, to acknowledge the fact that they are close to their culture. And on another note, culture is highly influenced by other cultures. Take the Philippines - highly influenced by Spanish and American rule. Ever wonder Spanish and Tagalog share the same words?

______"Our cultures are slowly dying. Only few practice the filipino traditions nowadays." For one, you haven't gone door-to-door to every Filipino family's house. You'd be surprised how much 'Pinoy pride' there is. You mentioned how "ln school, lots of my friend speak english rather than tagalog." Keep in mind that being bilingual is a great thing. But that's not the only point I'm making against your abhorration towards the use of the English language in the Philippines. IF YOU ARE A TRUE FILIPINO LIKE YOU CLAIM YOU ARE, YOU'D KNOW YOUR HISTORY. And guess what was part of your History? American rule. Well, even after fighting off the Americans, the Filipino community still incorporates a large majority of American media into their own. I'm sure you're used to our songs being played on YOUR radio stations, YOUR MTV, and performed by YOUR artists. And guess what, the U.S DOES play a big part in YOUR culture. Pretty ironic how much bloodshed there was for your Independence when you now openly accept, even desire for American media influences.

______"Filipino are changing nowadays. They want to study nursing to be able to go to america rather than helping our fellow filipino who needed their service." I think that's a pretty rash stereotype. How about the majority that study Nursing stateside to only come back home and contribute their skills there? You seem pretty damn selfish, considering your narrow points of view. You claim you have it so bad. Yes, I agree, the Philippines IS poverty-stricken, but I'm sure you'd see things in a different light if you spent a month in Ethiopia.

______You can't judge one's pride or loyalty or credibility to his or her culture with a couple of pathetic questions. It's a joke. YOU'RE a joke. You ask questions like "Do you eat adobo?, Do you like Dinuguan?" So if I were to ask a Mexican guy if he eats Tacos and he replies, "No" then he's not a 'true' Mexican, who's close to his culture? He pretty much fails your 'test', eh? I'm not even going to run down the list. Like I said before, this is all pathetic and a joke. Accept change, accept distance from culture, don't feel the need to insult and put down people with some sorry ass excuse for a test. You know what, if anything, you should look at YOURSELF. Your insecurities and need for attention that you're 100% Filipino pride and judging others shows how much more down the line you have to figure out who you are. So before you make others, analyze who you REALLY are.

Nekked,Nov 22 2004, 11:03 AM] this topic.. is.. bullshit...

who are YOU to tell someone that they ARENT filipino? If the dont know much about their culture, thats really not their fault.. is it? that's their parents' fault for not teaching them. Yes: if both your parents are filipino.. you're filipino.. if ONE of your parents are filipino.. you're still filipino... if one of your parents is HALF filipino.. you're filipino. I dont see why people have to "pass" an "exam" just to be acknowledged as a member of their ethnic group. who made it YOUR job to determine who's really filipino, and who's not? what gives YOU the right to deprive someone of their ethnicity and cultural background?

and learn to speak english.

Thats the main reason i didnt bother answering some stupid ass questions. Both Trish and Joe made a point, We dont need to take a test to be acknowledged as a member of their ethnicity.

i don't think that u should judge (can't really find the right word.) people whether they are filipino or not with a bunch of questions. if a black person considers himself filipino... hell, he would be prolly be more pinoy than our granparents... ya i don't think i'm making sense... but who cares...

Then why in the world did you go ahead and answer the questions that you found so irrationally judgmental?

I'm a domestic Filipino? Lol. Well I don't really care. All this "I'm _____" is just to classify ourselves. You don't really need to know your own culture to be it. If you're from there, you're from there. There's no such thing as a "true" filipino or w/e. nationalities, races, and sex preference are just tools of classification. Something we can do without. We try to seperate ourselves and in doing that we create hate for each other.

From going back to the homeland several times. I can tell you. If you lives a good amount of time in some other country than Philippines especially the United States then YOU ARE NOT FILIPINA/FILIPINO
Your ethnicity may be so, but nationality wise you arent.

I'll first give an example of my parents. They were raised in d Philippines both lived there till their early 20's when they got an oppertunity to come to America. My mom because she was a nurse, Dad because he was an engineer. Since then, theyve spent their lives here in america. 18+ years later. Their nothing but reflection of American values, with some deep implanted filipino values as well and in addition some filipino culture to that. However, if you see their drive to work, to obtain, to be rich and earn it thru hard work, to raise kids thouroughly, and many other things. You will notice that other than the fact my dad may be brown (well mom is one of those light filipinas), and sometimes the fob accent (which my parents for the most part speak english as well as any american born citizen such as myself) you will note their basically Americans who eat filipino foods and do some filipino tradition.

We went to the Philippines last summer. Everyone right away not only knew i wasnt filipino. They considered my parents not even filipino. Just the way the filipino society and values are back there is soo much diffrent than ours.

That is why I guess I am also fascinated by AP History as a nerd I might sound. Cause any of you taking that class must have learned that the people from Britain who founded the 13 colonies in New England have evolved and grown to people who have called themselves Brittish but in reality WERE NOT brittish for they had values and mentality which has evolved to the Puritan values of America.

And as history was, I see the same for my parents, who have evolved to the puristic values which america exhibits. Not a puritan, not religious? Doesn't matter, Parents and I are catholic, and they are using the values which the puritans used back in the day. Even all you who aren't religious at all. If you have the drive to be successful, to have an education, to find a good job which will earn you money, then you are a offspring of the "true" american values established by puritans.

See I learned all this from AP US. tongue.gif So anyway, besides going on and on and on about what ive learned in a class, back to the point.

Chances are, every single person here who claims to be filipino are like the colonists who claimed they were Brittish. You look filipino, have some values and traditions of a filipino, But you definatly arent and it is obvious to real filipinos when you go back to the homeland.

QUOTE
i don't think that u should judge (can't really find the right word.) people whether they are filipino or not with a bunch of questions. if a black person considers himself filipino... hell, he would be prolly be more pinoy than our granparents... ya i don't think i'm making sense... but who cares...

Yes who cares... I do not wish to offend you. However, that is totally WRONG. If a black person were to stay a long time in Philippines, inherit their values and mentality of thinking in addition some culture and filipino tradition then yes he will obviously be more of a "filipino" compared to ethnic filipinos living in America.

But if he just says he's filipino, just in the same way I can say I'm canadian, and be obsessed with canadians, but unless I'v lived there for a long tme and truly experienced the life of one then how can I say I am a canadian other than the fact I have book knowledge of them?

As for the questions asked in this thread by the first poster. Obviously a couple of questions would not justify if your truley filipino or not. But I doubt that was the intention of the first poster. It was more intended I believe to be of entertainment to see how much you know about you history/ancestry. With the people who couldnt answer those questions, goes to show how distant "americanized filipinos" are compared to filipinos living in the Philippines.

But the funny part is.... in addition to the post I have made below this one about dialects. A filipino in the Philippines who possibly is a farmer in the south, dependent soley on himself and trade of the crop he grows, may not speak tagalog. So All your tagalog questions he will get wrong. Then about the who is who? With how self center-ed most filipinos are over there may not care and possibly forgotten about their history or their government for the past couple years. Same goes for americans here who dont care about politics and the world around them that they dont know who historical figured in America are, or who runs the government today.

Just some random thoughts that came to my mind... Shiet look at my post im really reflecting how much school is dominating my life. All I talk about is school. I need a life hahaha.

Isn't it Tagalog? or Ilocano? or Pampangan? or Visayan? or all those other types of tagalog? Not "soeaking in Filipino" o.0

thumbsup.gif

In the Philippines there is a vast amount of Islands. 20,000 I believe maybe less or more, dont quote me on that part. However due to the geographic scattering of the philippines everyone over large amount of time have developed their own language. Do not forget filipinos used to live in tribes basically before spanish invasion of Philippines.

So now in present day you come with all these diffrent dialects which Filipinos speak. Tagalog, Ilocano, Pampangan, Visaya are all diffrent dialects. They sound alike, but their tottally diffrent. Some words in dialects match words and meanings of other dialects but for the most part a tottaly diffrent language. My dad is like half ilocano and my mom isnt. So when i'd go to my dad side grandparent's house my grandma would start speaking in ilocano to my dad by accident and my mom would first think its tagalog until she realizes she doesnt know what the words coming from my grandmother's mouth are though it sounds like tagalog.

So since u got a bazillion dialects in the Philippines basically its hard to communicate to the whole country as a whole. From the northern islands and go southern islands and chances are they dont know tagalog.

BUT... All filipinos know English! Sure they might have a accent, but to think of it the national language of the Philippines should rather be considered English instead of tagalog because almost everyone there can speak english. But not everyone there speaks tagalog.
