faithin_felix
i agree, it's very deep. don't spoil it though. but the boy is very passionate to its surroundings, correct?
CrimsonArchangel
I'm gonna go against the gradient here and say that it was one of the worst books I've read... but don't let my opinion ruin it for you.

To each his own, I always say. happy.gif

Holden rocks.
One of my favorite books of all time.
I read it in middle school and was able to relate to his character.
silver-rain
i had to read catcher in the rye freshman year, and i loved it. it is definitely one of my favorite books.
mysticbreeze
I read it over the summer for my English class. At first I didn't like it, but as I read further and completed it, I appreciated what a good book it was. I can relate to Holden a lot too. _smile.gif

omg I LOVE THAT BOOK!! sometimes i feel like Holden....and i love this quote:

"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around-nobody big, I mean-except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy"
Pretty in Pink
One of my favorite books. Holden, one of the few people that actually make sense.
faithin_felix
i'm on chapter seven now, and holden relates to me a lot.
MasterNe0
I read it last year. One of my favorite books of from school.
Very rare to read a good book from school.

"beautiful and lost"

*sigh.. yes, that's exactly what he is...wub.gif
vehvih
Hehe, my older sister said it was hell of boring. In my old school, we are required to read that book in the higher level tongue.gif but hell, I'm not in that school anymore, which is dissapointing because I so miss that school cry.gif

KissMe2408
awwwww i loved that book. The guy was so....real and lost..and he just kinda sounded sexy, haha! yah i'm def the only one that would actually think that. But yah i actually just finished reading it a lil while ago. It's a pretty good book when you HAVE to read it for school happy.gif

Yeah I know this old, but I love this book. It's one of my favorites. Holden's character is a type you don't see much of. Actually because of that, it caused a lot of controversy when it was released, which is also why it's referenced in many tv shows.

I throb.gif J.D. Salinger

I read "Catcher in the rye" a while ago (7th grade for english class). Holden just seemed way too whiny for me, and the entire plot was basically him talking and misunderstanding what went on around him. Holden was just wandering around, doing nothing and lost.
It was well-written, but I just didn't like the overall "feel" of it.

I thought it was pretty good. I mean, it was very short. I read it in a couple of hours spread apart in a couple of days. I think it's like a message in life, haha.
voguelove
our class is reading it right now. im personally on ch 20. ive gotta say that this book is going to be one of the best and confusing-ist books youll ever read.

and its weird, high school books are rarely something i enjoy.
scenekidsgo__rawr
I would totally do Holden.
Mr. Slowjamz
Holden is like me sometimes .
Freaky Krazer
I thought

1.) That guy doesn't make sense. Especially when he tries to describe what he doesn't like about the person.

2.) The whole "get a bang out of it" is ridiculous

3.) Holden Caulfied is annoying

4.) This book is another reason why emo kids hate society

Holden FTW!!!
Best book ever. I bought a new copy a few years ago because the salesman made it sound so taboo and because it didn't have a synopsis. (I hate book back synopses.) Now my copy is so worn and torn! Everyone should read this book.
Jackaroe
Meh... the book was all right, I guess.

I didn't like Holden or anyone else for that matter. Sorry. It just wasn't my type of book. But I'm glad I read it. It's a well-respected work, so it's good to have read.

for REAL.

Holden Caulfield is my God...

I've read this book 9 times in the last two years... some people have a comfort food, I have The Catcher In The Rye

1) He's not supposed to make sense, he's in turmoil. Hence why he's writing from a mental home.

2) That's called colloquialism

3) Holden is a) Godlike but b) yes, mildily irritating, but you're supposed to be frustrated... it's part of the charm

4) Not even worth it.

Hope you're not being sarcastic, haha.

I really do love J.D. Salinger, especially Catcher. Have you read Catch-22? Yossarian reminds me of Holden. My favourite part of Catcher is at the end when Holden see's "Fuck you" carved at his sister's school.

..edit..

Great rebuttal, I Shot JFK. if being emo means I like great literature then... you're a jackass.
I Shot JFK
I wasn't being sarcastic... The idea that TCITR makes emo kids hate the world is stupid, that's all.

And I've started Catch-22 but never finished because of assorted pressures from school, but i've been meanign to have another go... probably not until the summer though
mishyerr
I don't understand why Catcher in the Rye is notorious for being an "emo" book.

Well, I never got fast the first few pages; it was boring and didn't make any sense to me. I was like, "Why the hell is this a book?"
sprezzatura
Wow, the comments are making me going to hate the book when I read it several weeks later for English class.
Retrogressive
^Why on earth would you feel that way? It's a very small book.
disco infiltrator
It is very small; it only took me a couple of hours to read (and I loved it). I'm with you guys, Holden Caulfield is awesome. Maybe he's annoying to socially apt people, but to misanthropes like me, he's my number one relation.
Retrogressive
Forgive me for the spam, but... Huzzah, Sammi!!!
tokyo-rose
Yeah, I read it in 9th grade for English. The book was okay. I couldn't and still can't decide if I like Holden or not. He's one of those people you're set up to either hate or feel sympathy for, but I just don't know.
disco infiltrator
P.S. Just bought Franny and Zooey, planning on reading that soon once I finish up a couple of other books......I'm the worst, really; I read like, twenty books at a time.
I Shot JFK
My friend didn't like F & Z... i've been meaning to borrow that from her for a while, actually.

let me know if you enjoy it?

Me too, I actually have the book but it's buried in my collection. It's very old and coming apart. I've always meant to read it, but I haven't gotten around to it.
eavesdroppers
I'll agree and say that I loved it. It's rather vulgar for my taste, but it's ideals are pure gold.
I Shot JFK
How is it vulgar?
eavesdroppers
...the language throughout.

All he says is 'damn'...

Oh, and the word 'f**k' appears 6 times. Every single time it is criticising the use of the word...

i liked it _smile.gif but it wasnt what i expected
voguelove
i only bought my copy for one cent. $0.01.

booyah. and it's my favorite book, too. so i was happy.
