I think it's dumb. Why censor the internet? I feel like it's taking away freedom as speech. Besides people are just going to find a way to get around it. Just like drugs, people know it's illegal but they still do it anyways.

nerp. i understand people want to know what the government is doing but there should be a certain degree of media censorship when it comes to matters of national security.

Secrets aren't censorship, but if someone finds out those secrets he should be able to tell whoever he wants. just guard the secrets better if they don't want them out.

Granted this is most likely to try and stop pirating of music/movies/ect. I assume it would make it easier to shutdown sites (permanently and with greater penalty) like pirate bay and other torrent sites. As well as streaming sites. So in that sense they have every right to pass the bill.

I have a legit fear of people trying to heavily censor and control the internet. As well as running it similar to the way they run TV (you pay this much for these channels, but have to pay this much extra for those channels). Maybe I am just paranoid.

Or I am wayy to protective of the internet.

the main purpose of the bill is merely to shutdown piracy sites. what people are angry about is how the bill proposes a technology to accomplish that, which also puts a lot of other power in their hands which could potentially limit free speech and access to information on the internet. they could also erase/prevent records of events, people, etc.

the gov would but they have no control over foreign websites. this bill proposes that government can control what american citizens see through the isp (internet service provider). then they wouldn't have to shut down sites, they could just stop us from seeing it. this is the same technology the north korean government currently uses to censor what their citizens see.

I am not going to lie, I have not read far into the very specifics of the bill itself (yet), which is irresponsible of me seeing how I am preaching against it, but I do feel like people aren't caring as much as they should be caring. From what I have witnessed at least.

Probably in China as well. Tumblr "censored" its content on my dashboard to get me to sign a petition against this bill, which I did because I wanted to check the posts. If the American government wants to curb illegal downloading, they should just go after the people who are downloading media for free more aggressively instead of using what seems like a blanket method of censoring the Internet in general.

Going after people who torrent would be damn near impossible. There are way too many. And you get that little issue of suing a 13 year old child for thousands of dollars for downloading a single song.

you'll get companies suing x number of defendants and offering to settle for say $1,000 per movie. these people get sued in federal court and because there are so many defendants in one suit they cant transfer the venue and wherever the suit is filed becomes the most convenient location. people either have to incur the expenses of hiring a lawyer to fight it and flying out there or just saying "it's not worth it" and paying the settlement offer. this to hundreds and hundreds of people nets the companies lots of monies. it also gets class actions filed so there's a lawyer to defend them all claiming they found the information illegally from isps

it's not profitable to actually sue individuals so most companies will only do it every once in a while as a scare tactic. 99.999% of legal action involving illegal file sharing is between either the RIAA or MPAA and a small torrent site like re1ease.net (that was actually [wrongfully, the servers are in spain where this stuff is legal] seized by ICE but it's just an example)

pirating will always be around. Like drugs. You can't just shoot every weed dealer you see jut to stop the selling of weed.
