I was labelled a goth at a young age. I hadn't even yet turned thirteen, I was only in seventh grade. I had been through a lot that year, and not only that, a lot of it couldn't be helped due to a health problem I was diagnosed with, a certain chemical imbalance that causes me to become depressed easier than most.
Sure, the way I dressed, the way I acted of that year fit a goth I suppose. Thing is, I don't like labels. I don't believe in labels. You can't just say what a person is in your eyes and pretend you know them, because you don't, and with that kind of attitude you never will.
People judge others due to the labels they're cursed with. So what, a person wears black, and isn't that great around people. Does that really make them a goth? And if so, what exactly is a goth? What is the mentality of a goth. What makes them deep down different from anyone else?
Can the way a person dresses really influence their personality? Just because one person's not as mainwave as the next, just because they're more artistic in the way they dress and carry themselves, does that really give anyone the right to shun them? Does that really change them?
Some people who are labeled as something actually conform to fit that label. That shows weakness, that shows loss of self. No matter what a person calls you, you should always be yourself. Who you truly are is what makes you different from the next person.
It used to annoy me when a person would come up to me and ask me if I was a "goth" or a "Satan worshipper". I used to say yes just to scare them. Now, I don't care. Now, my only reply is, "I am myself, if you have a problem with that. Get out of my face."
In my own personal opinion the best friends are those that can see pass the labels. The friends that see the real you, no matter what clothes you wear. No matter how you act, no matter your family, or your problems. If you can accept a person for who they are...then you can be true to yourself...
-------------------The End
Okay, it wasn't my best piece of work. I plan to revise it before I submit it when I get back to school. It just came to me for some reason.

I don't think you should even consider goth if you claim not to be one. Labels are stupid so why even bother with people who want to label you?

Yes, I am planning to share this with my class come freshman year. Which is August 9th. The English teacher always starts with a reading of an essay, poem, story or such having to do with something that really concerns you.
To loseronaisle5: I'm not bothering with them. I'm dealing with them. I'm trying to reduce them. If you're viewing this as some "pity me I'm such a lost little girl in this world" piece, then please don't, and I'm very sorry because I've apparently not written the words I was feeling. I don't consider myself to be a goth, that was what this whole thing was about. It's just a label.
I was worried about posting a piece like this, because I didn't know if people would understand where I was coming from, but then again it was kind of to make people understand my point of view. I'm sorry if this essay is offensive in anyway to anyone.

yea labels are annoying but we can't do anything about it. they were just made to make life easier. like if you wanna talk about a certain group, you don't wanna say all their names so you just say, "the preps" "the jocks"... get it? i know, it sucks to be labeled, but its life. just deal. as long as you're true to yourself, thats all that matters.

Alright. I agree with you there. Labels make life easier. A whole lot of things make life easier. Hell, killing someone you hate would make life easier than having to deal with seeing their faces everyday of your life. Disowning a family member would be easier under some circumstances, but you can't, because they're family.
Just because something is easier, that doesn't make it right.
