Full Version: Building Another Computer

Okay, so the computer you guys helped me out with at first was mostly a budget computer, but now I'm going to start saving up so I can buy something the really gives me awesome performance.

So I thought I'd ask a couple questions.

I noticed (of course) that AMD has different types of processors, obviously. But what type of AMD processor should I go for? I want something that makes the computer go really fast.

I also don't know what motherboard I should get according to what processor I have. Newegg does tell what processors are compatible, but I want something that gives me great results.

I'm sure I'll have other questions along the way, but I need some help getting started.

All I have picked out so far is a tower and hard drive. I know I want to get 4 gigs of RAM, but if I could get something with more than 2 RAM slots, that would be awesome.

I think nehalem is quad core, and it'll be the fastest processor AMD offers

I'm trying to buy everything from Newegg like last time, but that's the best one I found. If I was to get something like that, what should I look for in other hardware?
tcunningham
maybe phenom is the best amd has.. i'm not entirely sure. I'm not very good at picking parts... but what is your budget?
Maccabee
You do know that for an extra 5 bucks you can get 250gb right? and another 3 gets you 320gb?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136098
and this is a little better.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103471
shop for the case last. keep in mind that the case has to support the mobo. and the mobo will have to be able to support AMD Phenom II X4. in specs it will always say motherboard compatibility.
and the mobo will say ram standard and cpu type.
it also says max ram. and for 4 gb of ram you will prob want 64bit os to be safe.
pick you processor then you mobo, then ram, then case, then hard drive optical drive and anthing else. and you will want a graphics card cause onboard, shares memory.
o and if your going all out are you sure you dont want it to be pretty?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811129066
that supports any board.

I'm trying to keep the budget at 600 dollars or less.

Thanks for the advice bro. I'm going to redo the list I had now and start it how you said to do it. I'll put up a list of links after I pick and you guys can help me out, yeah?
Maccabee
yup.
deadmellotron
Alright, I pretty much compiled everything together, and kept it all under 600 dollars. The part I am most concerned about is the video card, because I really do not know what I'm looking for, but I picked out one anyways since it was a reasonable price.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128392
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231276

Case Fan: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835103024
Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136074
Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814161287
Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817171046

Mouse: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826105148

I was going to throw in an operating system, but Windows 7 is too expensive, so I'll just wait for a torrent. Anything I should change out?
Maccabee
this mouse is wicked.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826782002
and cheaper. im gonna look for a cheaper mobo that supports cheaper ram.
and if the mobo doesnt have onboard youll have to get a graphics card.
im gonna wait for someone else on that cause that isnt my area.
although not so necessary do keep the fan.

mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813138111
(with onboard)
ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145184
thats 60 less. and
and its controversial that the mobo I showed you has a better video card then the one you chose. so you save another 75.

so maybe you can get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826104178
and this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16823131040
with the leftover?
or my personal fave: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826104015
or this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16823176011
(going keyboard and mouse crazy, haha)

ps: dont look at the pics on the main page. always click view all and set it to show cheapest to highest.
deadmellotron
Thanks for taking a look at it bro. That would make more sense to buy that though. I didn't even notice it didn't have the things I needed for it. Eh, I'm set on the mouse I picked actually. I am using the same mouse now, but it's white and I love it. I just want a black one though, ha.

and a better and cheaper psu.

^ That's all you have so far for yours?
Maccabee

looks like your pc lookd good though. it adds up to only 435.

Motherboard isn't something to skimp on.

Nehalem is one of Intel's workstation chips. It's the codename for Xeons, i7s, and i9s.

Anyway OP, I'll throw something together for you. Enjoy this shit.

I'm trying to keep it under 600 but under 500 would be nice too.

Because I know the names of everything, and watch prices for most things (other than cases, hard drives, and optical drives, which don't really fluctuate much). I already know what I'm looking for.
Maccabee
the rig I showed is 150 cheaper and has a better processor. the ram is just a LITTLE bit slower.

the rig I showed is 150 cheaper and has a better processor. the ram is just a LITTLE bit slower.

It also has a cheap shitty motherboard, and integrated graphics from five generations ago. The RAM is much slower, and the CPU only scores twelve more points in nearly every worthwile benchmarking application.

You might as well be sticking a new HD 5870 in a Pentium Pro rig.

Also, if I drop the GPU like you did, it's still a much better rig, and is only a few dollars more. If I drop the GPU, switch to that cheap flimsy case, and get that tiny HDD, then it's the same price and better.

Also that PSU you picked is shit. I would be surprised if it could put out anywhere near it's supposed 400w power. Maybe 300-350 at most.

And you're sticking an mATX board in an ATX case. IO panel isn't going to align properly. You have to swap out the IO panel if you want that case with that shitty motherboard.

If you meant that PSU is for your (mITX) computer, it's not going to fit.

how does the gpu effect performance?

Ok, lets sacrifice quality for price. Biostar motherboards do nothing but die.

Also about the GPU, you can't be serious. You can't even run Aero with a 6150 integrated, let alone do anything productive.

6150 was poor even before it came out. It's about the quality of an ATI Rage Pro from 1998.
deadmellotron
Thanks for helping me out with that CJ. I really appreciate it.
