Help me decide: Macbook Pro 13" or a Nikon D40

Obvious answer for some of you, get the Macbook Pro, but there are things I need both of them for, but right now I'm leaning more towards the camera.

Prices:
  • MacBook Pro 13" - $1100; Brand new hard drive just put in it with a one year warranty. Make 200 dollar payments every two weeks.
  • Nikon D40 - $450; Comes with Nikon strap, 2GB memory card, and all that jazz; Money up front.

What I Would Need the Mac for:

Obviously, I'd need it for designing and mainly designing.

What I would Need the Nikon for:

Taking band promos for layouts; taking photos at shows (I go to shows once or twice every two weeks at the most); I don't have a camera as it is; I am allowed VIP access at any shows sponsored by Fearless Records with press passes, so yeah.

What do you think I should go for?

I'd say camera, because you don't have one right now but you obviously have a computer and seem to be getting by using it for designing. Then you can take photos at shows and charge people for them and make enough money to get the Macbook... viola.

I would get the camera.

Honestly, photography > computing. I'd rather be taking photos instead of sitting in front of the computer. But that applies more to hobbies; you seem to want it for something in between a hobby and a job.

There are pros and cons to each:
  1. The camera is a lot cheaper than the MacBook Pro. From other postings, you've indicated that you don't exactly have an inexhaustible supply of cash.
  2. But (and you'll have to take my word for this), photography is a f*cking expensive hobby and an even more expensive profession.
  3. From your other postings about the forum, you already have a laptop. Maybe it's not a Mac _smile.gif, but you have one. You don't, however, have a camera.
  4. As the owner of a 13" MacBook Pro, I can attest to the fact that they're really, really f*cking awesome.
Thus I think there are several questions you need to ask yourself:
  1. Will you spend more time designing, or taking photos?
  2. If you're going to spend more time designing, is it worth spending $700 more and sacrificing a camera to buy a laptop? If you're going to spend more time taking pictures, is it worth (probably) putting off the purchase of a MacBook Pro?
  3. Which would you rather do, take photos or design? (Okay, obviously you want to do both, but this is a thought exercise: Think about which you'd rather do if you could only do one of those things, and use that to guide your decision. Be honest with yourself, too.)
  4. Which is more likely to get you girls, a camera or a MacBook Pro?

Truly the deciding factor.

I like the idea of getting the camera. My boyfriend is very much into urban exploring photography and while I don't have the energy to adventure like that, I can see how much it does for him. It's a very fulfilling hobby (and he doesn't spend much money, beyond initial equipment costs).

I don't know, I guess I'd rather see people engage in activities that gets them out of the house. One day, more than likely, you'll be in an office type setting or at minimum, be in an employment situation when you are inside most of the time. Buy the camera and enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of nature as much as you can, as often as you can, while you still can.

I think it's pretty much unanimous. Plus you'd make Juna happy, har har.
