The processor in my desktop is really old and ancient. I really want to buy a new one, but have no clue about what kind of processors to look into. I'm looking for a pretty decent one that goes faster than what is in my computer now. The processor I have now is an Intel Celeron M. I don't know if this is a determining factor, but if there is a certain processor that should be used for designing, throw some of those suggestions at me. I'm not a gamer at all, so that isn't really a big factor in this.

Whats your budget. You should keep an intel. And most programs cant use quad cores so I think you should get a intel dual core processor. The hugher the ghz the better.
If I were you I would get this.

You've still got a socket 478 motherboard. Short of buying a Pentium 4 Prescott (which would still be a pretty big improvement, but it's not worth the money), there isn't much you can do without upgrading the motherboard, in which case you would need to reinstall the OS, probably get a new case, and maybe a new GPU (if you don't want to stick with integrated.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116027That's your only option without getting a completely new computer. It's under
$100, but it's ancient, and will not perform up to modern standards.
also wtf @ 19x multiplier, I keep mine at 9x.

Aug 16 2009, 01:05 PM
^ Dang. :/ So I guess I'm going to have to save up for a new computer then.
I don't even know anything about that multiplier thing, tbh. I have no clue what the hell it means or anything, excuse my stupidity, haha.
itanium
Aug 16 2009, 01:12 PM
High multiplier like that just means your processor is rated waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay higher than your FSB.
I may be able to throw together something decent on Newegg for less than $100, if I'm not going to have to buy a GPU, RAM, and all that fun shit.
Take a screenshot of the mainboard, memory, and graphics tabs of that program.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827118030A good general rule when building computers is "If it doesn't fit, it probably doesn't go there." Everything on the motherboard is a different shape.

Aug 16 2009, 01:59 PM
Alright, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for helping me out thus far.
As far as that casing goes that you gave me the link to, it looks like it only gives me space for 2 USB drives in the back and 2 up front. On the back of mine, it has room for four USB slots, and I currently use all of them along with the USB ports I have up front (Webcam, External HD, Printer, Mouse, Keyboard, MIDI Keyboard). Would I still be able to use that casing, since it's looking different from mine? I'll send you a picture of the back if you need it.

I have another question as well. Would it be okay to use the RAM I have in the computer I'm using now for the other computer?

No. The RAM in your computer is DDR. That motherboard requires DDR2.

The hard drive will have your OS on it. You should be able to just re-register it by using the product code on your case, or phone activation.

Wow, I feel dumb for asking that, haha.
One more question, sorry. As far as graphic cards go, I need get a new one of those as well. Photoshop CS4 disables a lot of visual enhancements because mine is so outdated. Should I really worry about that?
itanium
Aug 16 2009, 09:05 PM
With that 8100 GT integrated into that motherboard, probably not. If CS4 does end up doing that, just order a 4650 or something.

I believe this thread was about a processor and basically turned into me building up a new computer, not about what a Mac has compared to a Desktop computer. Just because you have a Mac doesn't mean shit. I don't have the money to go buying it. When you get a job, you'll see. End of discussion.

I know that, but you put Macs on a pedestal like it's something that can't be classified. Right now, a Mac isn't for me because of the money I make. I don't care if what I buy is shit to you, your opinion doesn't matter obviously.

Just the whole package for me is amazing. I just hate wasting time modding my pc to make it how I want. And because Mac's havent taken over pc's YET there arent thousands of crappy freeware programs out there. I have yet to find a useless mac application.
PS: I dont ever have to use an installer again. I just drag programs to the applications folder. And I dont have to save all my work and close everything else to do it.
Sorry tj.

True.
The difference?
I never plan on using a pc as my primary computer again.
When I first started using linux I loved it. But then I realized it sucked because I have to spend hours customizing it to get it work. And it has no software compatibility.
