Well my laptop recently broke. I dont know what happened. I just updated and when I restarted, it seemed like all services were off and here was nohing I could do. Sysm restore wouldnt work, sound wouldnt work, themes wouldnt work, its now using windows classic. But anyways was prett fed up with my oxymoron of a laptop. 17 inches. I had always gone into sams club and just choosen the best laptop of the 4 sitting there but i am NOT doing that again. Im going to be buying online. O and I should be able to get an exchange for my non working laptop. They will probabl give me 750 dollars store credit. So... You can tell me how to fix my laptop if you want but I would rather take it in, not working, so I will have something to use to get the store credit. (im a jew...)

So first of all, I want your opinion on whether I should get a laptop or a desktop, I think I am going to get them because they are uch more comfortable for me and because I can get such higher specs.

O and even though I have 750 dollars My budget max is about 900. I use computer everyday so i might as well spend a little money.

Second I need help choosing one. I think I only need help choosing a desktop.

I can only choose from walmart and samsclub because tha is where the store credit works.

Walmart desktops...
http://www.walmart.com/browse/Computers/De...elected_items=+

Sams club desktops...
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate....=1&sortby=2

If it asks fo you to choose a club put in the zip code 76262 and choose the grapevine one.

I also fancy the ones without monitors so I can choose my own... i reall liked on that had a 2.8ghz qaud core processor and 6gb ram but it was amd... isnt amd worse?

Tanks :)
Mikeplyts
that's pretty dumb to put out your zip code and the fact that numerous people here know your first and last name.
Maccabee
how do u figure that?
ill give u my address if u want. no joke.
Mikeplyts
sure. go for it.

well, they way I figure is that some pedo will look up that zip code and figure out which area your around and then they could take a phonebook or something and look up your name. There's always a way. of course, I'm not sure if there is a pedo out there who wants you so I guess you're safe. ^_^
wwwww
AMD is in no way worse than Intel. Saying that it is would be the deepest you can get into fanboyism.
And get a desktop.

I'll throw something together on newegg. For now I'll assume your budget is $800.

Edit:

Also never buy a prebuilt. They add at least $200 for the automated process of building it in the factory.
wwwww
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWi...Number=14373488

For this build, I will not allow you to buy anything less than the x64 operating system I have in the wishlist. If you do buy an x86 operating system, you will only be able to use about 2.8 Gb ram.

It comes up to $782.90, plus shipping and handling. I didn't include a monitor. That will run you an extra $120.

Also, if you do get this build, the processor has an unlockable fourth core. I'll walk you through that if you can't figure it out. It's also very easy to overclock this one. You could probably hit 3.5 GHz on stock cooling.

O! Me likey! The only problem with that is, like I said I am exchanging my laptop. So the only way I could get cash instead was if my parents bought a tv or furniture and used the store credit and gave me cash. And still my mum thinks I shouldn't make my own computer. I don't see the big deal though. I'm just screwing stuff together. The only problem I have with that build is the case and the keyboard and mouse. And I already the speakers. So my final amount would be 900 after monitor, but thats ok. Thanks.

And there are at least 99999999999 good tutorials on the internet on how to build a computer. Each one will show you everything you need to know.

Also: if you already have speakers, then it's going to be $70+s&h cheaper.

Although I would have loved to build my own computer, and get a desktop, I decided that I would stick with a laptop.
I'm just sad I don't get a big screen resolution. But it will make it much easier...

Im gonna get this:

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate....&pCatg=5680

Its exactly what I have now, but it is 15.6 inches. It has the same screen resolution though.
The only differences are the extra gb of ram and a 320gb hard drive instead of 160gb. Also one of the best parts is that when Windows 7 comes out I get a free upgrade to Windows 7 64bit home edition! I just hope it is OEM. Because the dell studio comes pre installed with a ton of crap.
wwwww
Maccabee
Captain, I am sensing large amounts of win in this sector.
wwwww
no, large amounts of fail.
Mikeplyts
no, large amounts of shit.
Maccabee
Also just found out that I will be taking a wed/graphic design internship so I need a lappy.
wwwww
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834200025

And get the XP downgrade.
Maccabee
That extra .5 ghz sure does look tempting but...again I have store credit so I have to get it from sams club. And that computer doesnt have a webcam. And it is ugly. And has 2gb less ram. And the one from sams comes with a free windows 7 upgrade when it comes out. How much lighter is windows 7 by the way? XP could run very well on 2gb ram. How about 7? Or does it only make it turn on and off faster. O and of course that laptop is 12800x800 the sams one is 1440x900.
wwwww
Windows 7 isn't lighter than Vista, it's coded better.
Maccabee
Well I used my Jew skills to get a full cash refund on my laptop EXCHANGE! My mom has offered to let me use her laptop with 128mb ram and a 1.3ghz processor. HAHA. It is basically in safe mode but I turned on services.

So I have a few days to decide what im gonna get now that I can get it from anywhere.
wwwww
How much cash do you have? I can continue looking for good deals, since that's what I do all day anyway.
Maccabee
750.
But im willing to pay an extra 100.
Another idea that you are gonna hate, im probably gonna buy a desktop and a netbook instead of a super desktop cause I need something for my internship. So the desktop is 600 and has a 2.8ghz processor and 4gb ram, and the netbook is 300 and has 1gb ram and a 1.6ghz cell processor but ill mod it so its uber fast. I might just reinstall xp using nlite.

Desktop:
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate....&pCatg=5816

Netbook:
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate....amp;pCatg=11986
This isnt the one I saw in stores but it was similar.

O and the other desktop I was thinking about. The only difference I think is .2ghz but its intel not amd. Not sure which one I like more.
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate....&pCatg=5816
I was bummed that I couldnt use my own monitor so I though I could use one o these, since they come with xp.
Does google desktop work like the vista search cause I have become pretty attached to vista search.
Cause then I could get this, and buy my own monitor.
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate....&pCatg=5816

So unfortunately for you I think im gonna buy from sams. Since im paying cash, next time I want a new computer I will find something wrong with it and get a new one. I have had 3 computers now without paying a penny.
wwwww
Once again, don't buy prebuilt for the desktop. Laptops, never build yourself. It's a mess.

The netbook:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834147824

The desktop:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWi...tNumber=7291029

Those are all horrible deals. I can build those for under 400 each.
Maccabee
That desktop is an extra 16 dollars, it has .1 ghz processor power left, and the mouse and keyboard are uglier. And I cant return it in 3 years to get the latest technology for no cost to me! What wrong with prebuilts?! I just need help choosing between the prebuilts! And why would I buy from newegg instead of sams club when I can get the exact same thing at sames for the exact same price.

How about this...just tell me which is better. Amd or intel? I prefer intel just because they are more popular, but... idk.
Maccabee
Dang this is hard,.. so many options. A laptop, a cheap desktop and a netbook, or a desktop. I think after all I might be getting an imac. haha. i knew I would movie to mac eventually so I might as well do it now. Ill have to pay an extra 750 though. Which is like 2/5 of all my money.

Well, intel may have one of the best processors the i7, but if you want price:performance. I'd go with AMD.

The Athlon II I put in that build is a retooled Phenom II (aka one of the best processors on the market), the only difference is the smaller cache.
But it's not just the processor. I gave you faster RAM (and more of it), better case, better PSU, better GPU, better motherboard, and a faster hard drive. With this you have a computer that preforms ten times better, and will last at least twice as long.

And no bloatware.

Also, Intel has the fastest mainstream processor, but unless you're buying an i7 Extreme for $999, AMD offers the same performance for a cheaper price.

also fyi: GHz is not the only thing that makes a processor fast. You can get a Celeron to 5.5 GHz on air, but it's still not going to perform as well as a 2.8 GHz Phenom II

And you can't get the same thing from Sam's Club for the same price. All prebuilt brands skimp out on important parts of the computer. Like they'll give you DDR2 667 instead of DDR2 800, or they'll give you a cheap $15 PSU that goes jihad on you and takes out the entire system with it. Or they give you a 5200 RPM hard drive. Or they give you a DVD-ROM drive instead of a DVD burner. Or they give you a cheap motherboard with that they built themselves so you can't upgrade when you need to.

An advantage of buying prebuilt is that, as long as the medium doesn't go out of fashion, the computer is completely upgradable. And AM2+, PCIe, and DDR2 aren't going to go out of fashion anytime soon. 100% of prebuilt manufacturers use proprietary parts, meaning you if you ever want to upgrade, either it's not going to happen, or you have to pay out the ass for more ddr2 667, 5200 rpm drives, and jihad PSUs.

Tl;dr: Prebuilt is for the computer illiterate.
Maccabee
Well that completely makes sense...but i didnt know some ram was faster then others. And actually those desktops did have 5200 rpm hard drives. Heres another question that you will hate...what about prebuilt computers made by apple? Do they skip out on the same stuff? I really dont plan on upgrading but is the ram and whatnot they come with good quality? Because I knew that eventually I would move to mac so I thought I would dish out the cash and get it now. Im gonna get the 24-inch : 2.66GHz. I know it is overpriced, but of all their computers I think it is the best deal. Im just tired of windows. Even when I get my netbook im gonna put linux on it.

What do you think is the best time to get an imac? Their business plan is to keep coming out with new stuff so you keep buying so I want to buy as soon as a new one comes out. Does the latest os(snow leopord) now ship on all their computers? *waits for mipadi*
wwwww
Apple does not skip out on anything, but that little picture of the apple on the computer jacks up the price so high it's almost not worth buying official hardware.
Maccabee
I cantz wait... O and I heard that snow leopard has much faster boot and shut down times.
wwwww
I haven't heard that, but I only check out Apple forums when I'm looking for something new to do with my iPod, so I don't hear much regarding Mac.

I wanna try this. A dual boot ipod sounds wicked...
Maccabee
I was considering holding out on getting my mac for like 2-3 month because i heard around ocotober there will be a fai chance of the imac get visual updates and some spec bumps. I guess I could handle using a piece of crap for months...and it will give me a chance to settle into our new house.

Macs get a performance upgrade in fall, and new looks in spring. prices go down when they get upgrades.

The iMac will be due for an upgrade this fall, I think; no guarantees a new model will be released, but it may happen. Snow Leopard hasn't shipped at all yet. It's "scheduled" for September, and from what I've heard from very reliable sources wink.gif wink.gif it will almost definitely be released by September. But if you buy a Mac now, I think you can upgrade to Snow Leopard for $20 or something like that.

Anyway, a pre-built Mac from Apple is fine; I'd just recommend upgrading the RAM yourself, instead of springing for the Apple upgrade.
Maccabee
So do you think I should wait till the end of September? Ill have to use a 5 year old desktop but I will be able to do my work. Do you think imac updates will come out closer to the beginning of the fall or the end? I dont think I could wait for 4 months. I was also wondering if the upgrades would be to my advantage...because if they change the prices around they may force me to pay an extra 200$ to get the same thing but with the upgrades...

Probably around the same time Snow Leopard is released. Upgrades are almost always to your advantage, but sometimes they're big and other times they're not very significant.
