Im getting a 1TB HDD
I wanna install a new clean OS.

prolly for Gaming.

Windows Vista? or Windows 7 RC (its releasing after tomorrow)
wwwww
Depends on how much RAM and what kind of processor the computer you're using will have.

If you have 4 gigs of RAM with a 2.6GHz dual core or better, go for Vista. Otherwise, go for W7.
kryogenix
I don't think I can stomach having 1GB of data on one drive.
Maccabee
Like cj siad, it depends. But i'd say 7 cause its lighter. If it were me i would use xp. Its the best for gaming!

Well luckily, it's 1 TB.
Deospeon
My Current Core i7 will be taken to my brothers place in a few weeks.
So I'll be left with an old

Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM
350W PSU
and a Geforce 6600
so Im pimping it up..

I'll buy:

XFX GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512BITS
620W Modular Extra Silent PSU by Cooler Master
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 RAM (I'll be buying 4GB of it so I'll have 6GB)
Seagate 1TB 3.5 HDD
A4 Tech HD 800
A4 Tech PK-130MG Webcam
and maybe throw in some more cash and buy a
Creative 7.1 Sound Blaster Audigy Value

and srsly, should I really install Windows 7 RC as my primary OS?
Wont I have problems in March 2010?

This x1000. Vista Ultimate x64 rapes XP when gaming.
Deospeon
yo 9001
since Im building up an Otaku PC, why not cut down a few things and get more Otaku-ish stuff?

XFX Geforce GTX 260 Black Edition 896MB
Seagate 1TB Barracuda
Corsair 520W Modular PSU SLI Ready
Creative 7.1 Sound Blaster Xtreme Gamer
A4 Tech PK-130MG (I tried for Logitech's 9000! ITS NOT AVAILABLE! D;)
Razer Barracuda HP-1 =D
Corsair XMS2 2GB/800 DDR2 RAM (3 of them, so I'll have 8GB total)
as You see.. Im greedy when its RAM.. and im also greedy for GDDR3, its a shame that nVidia will take some time till it can released GDDR5 Geforce 300 Series. I'm a ATI Hater :)

---------
srsly, Vista Ultimate is always recommended by many companies for gaming.
Soon Windows 7 will replace Vista Ultimate, making it the most recommended OS for gaming.
illriginal
lolvista

Either Windows XP 64-Bit unless of course you have 32-bit processor... or Windows 7

Is ultimate better than home edition? I thought ultimate just has a few different network and server capabilities?
illriginal
Ultimate is for server use as well.
Deospeon
joseph... if a dumbass looks at the word "Ultimate" in Vista, then he'll prolly know what that means.

:O
Maccabee
...but what are the differences between Home edition and ultimate. Knowing that its "better" wont get me to buy it.
Deospeon
Home = You are limited to some stuff.
Ultimate = You can use all the features of Vista, that means you can watch more porn!

home= limted to some stuff...what stuff!
ultimate= you can use all the features? Which features are those?
illriginal
Dood just go to microsoft's website and it'll read specifically what things are missing in Home. The only thing off the top of my head that I know, is that Home doesn't have the capability to setup a server on it...

MasterNe0
The Barracuda 1TB is nice.I got a 4TBs of storage at home running in raid-1 (so I got 8 drives).

With Vista, I would go for Business or Above, anything below is useless if it cheaper. Or just stick with XP.

My guess is file storage. Or he could have them mirrored. Backup is always nice.
Deospeon
XFX GTX 285 ran out of stock.
I'll try the eVGA GTX 285..

Yo CJ, how would a
Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz with a 12mb Cache
go against a
Core i7 920 2.66GHz?
wwwww
The i7 beats it. Not by much though.

i7 usually overclocks better too.
Deospeon
lol then here will be my next rig

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 @ 2.4GHz
2GB Kingston DDR2 RAM
2GBx2 Corsair XMS2 XTREME GAMING MEMORY DDR2 RAM
Samsung Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM HDD
eVGA Geforce GTX 285 (512 BITS) 1GB
Cooler Master 620W Modular Power Supply SLI READY
ViewSonic VA1716W 17" Monitor
A4 Tech HD-800 Gaming Headphones (Virtual 7.1 Surround Sound)
A4 Tech PK-130MG Webcam.

Nothing comes close to the i7... You can overclock an i7 to 5GHz on air. ermm.gif

E4800 is better. As it's pushes 3.0GHz naturally.

Also no point in getting two different makes / model of RAM. Stick to Corsair, Kingston sucks and majority of the time their voltage can't go above 1.8v. Corsairs, typically all of them, are able to push 2.1v

Dunno who a4 is but as far as speakers and webcams go, logitech is the better buy.
wwwww
A4 headphones rape Logitech headphones.

That monitor is pretty tiny for the GTX 285. That GPU can run any resolution with ease.

That's funny for a so-called "raping" of Logitech, I, as a person deeply involved with technology, have never heard of A4.

If you wanna talk about "raping" Logitech, that'd be BOSE, nothin else.
wwwww
BOSE equals Logitech.

If you want some badass headphones, and have 1400 dollars that you're willing to blow on them, get the Sennheiser HD800.

only 2.4 ghz?

E4600 has lots of headroom. He's probably going to OC it.
Deospeon
I r poor D;
-------------
A4 Tech > Logitech
Semmheiser > A4 Tech

and in Webcams..

Logitech > EVERYTHING

Bose aint here, never heard bose.
-----------------------------

I think 4GB of Corsair is enough for me, I'll remove the Kingston and give it to teh poor.
Yes, GTX285 is too epic for that resolution, which enables me to play everything ULTRA HIGH on Crysis with 8xAA or 16xAA at a decent framerate. One guy on youtube did it at 1440x900, he got 30 fps without fraps. and 20-25fps with fraps.

Might get a decent monitor some other time..

no it doesn't... wtf please stop advising people with bad information. The most you'll get out of a E4600 on air would be 3.0 maybe 3.2GHz

On the E4800 you can EASILY push 3.6GHz and 4.0GHz with very good air cooling + heat sink/pipes.
wwwww
You'll kill an E4800 doing 4GHz on air. I wouldn't push it higher than 3.7. The E4600 can be pushed to 3.5 on air if you've got the right setup.

-.- there's people pushing 4.8s in water cooling.
wwwww
In water. We're talking air. I could push a Sempron to 4.8 on water if I wanted to.
Deospeon
I got a stock intel fan for my E4600 (the one that you get in the box with the processor)
wwwww
Well then maybe you can go for 2.5 GHz
Deospeon
I dont want to OC my Processor, its too risky.
As long as my PC will be able to play Crysis and GTA 4, I'm ok.
wwwww
You'll run those fine.
Deospeon
Fine.
Maccabee
How many ghz processor would you need to run crysis?

Buttsex... even the effin requirements to run Crysis owns your advice. 2.4 or 2.6GHz is gonna run that game shitty.

Deospeon, listen to me... I'm a legitimate Computer Engineer with a little over 10 years of experience in computers, including Engine Control Units (ECUs). If you want to run Crysis fine, there's 4 main things you need.

1. a processor able to push a minimum of 3.0GHz

2. 3GB of RAM or more

3. a video card that can handle maximum settings for ANY video game (the video card you're gonna buy is perfect, I would highly recommend EVGA's build of that specific card as they're the kings of nvidia, hands down.

4. a 64-bit OS whether it's Windows XP, Vista, or 7.

I preferably would use Windows XP or Windows 7... Vista has horrible bugs that give off false positives for a few things, including networking or internet connectivity for that matter.

The minimum requirements you're lookin at for Crysis is to run Crysis on low settings and quite honestly, low settings on Crysis or even GTA4 for that matter, is not even worth it.

Have patience, save your money, when you see a great deal, buy that product. You don't need to buy everything in one shot. Unless of course you're rich as all hell, then by all means create your PC by adding the parts into the wish list and purchase all of them in one shot.

Otherwise, just have patience...

EDIT: I read your post about having a stock heatsink / fan. I'm telling you right now if you're planning to run Crysis you need an aftermarket heatsink / fan.

Between that processor you have or about to purchase + the stock heat sink / fan... I can guarantee your game is going to run choppy, probably to the point that it'll freeze up.

Ya i found that.

Crap...so the prebuilt one isnt good enough...
Even though I will never be playing crysis. Or any games for that matter, I want a computer that can, cause I want a really powerful computer.
wwwww
^ Integrated graphics are perfect if you're not playing games on it.

So I'm ten years younger than you, and have as many years of experience as you?

Cool.

Also, what the f*ck do ECUs have to do with running Crysis?
Maccabee
Crap, not sure if I can make my own computer after all cause when I trade in my laptop I will have about 750 credit to sams club... But I cant use that on newegg...
