i don't even know if anyone here is interested in architecture. if you are, or if you just happen to run across some you like, post it here (unless you feel like making a whole topic for it). buildings, houses, whatever you like.

Joanne
Not so much my favourite architecture, but definitely something I find interesting:
I heard that the architecture of my university was inspired by prisons and that the architects even tried to imitate the bars on the windows. And then I heard the design was considered very modern and 'before their time'... _unsure.gif

architects with a sense of humor perhaps
Joanne
Yeah, people make fun of the school saying there's a high rate of suicides because it's so grey there. But there's... some green too.

i actually like the layout, though i can't say i'm in love with the outside appearance. i like the whole courtyard thing.
Joanne
Yeah, the courtyard with the pool is the prettiest part of campus. It's difficult to get a general view of the university though because it's mostly underground.

The Rose Garden at UBC is the perfect place to watch the sunset. Not really architecture in the most interesting sense but pretty nonetheless:

Our two big libraries are pretty too.
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (front):

Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (back):

The back is actually the old 1925 Main Library, and the new more modern-looking part was added recently.

Walter C Koerner Library

Lol. A couple took their wedding photos in front of the library as well. What dorks..."we met and fell in love at the library".

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Falling Water:

Falling Water is about two and a half hours from where I grew up, and I got to go see it a few years ago. It's a pretty impressive house. Wright's careful attention to detail really impressed me. For example, some parts of the house have glass running up almost the entire wall (both floors!); the edges of the floor (on the second floor) actually angle inwards, so you can't see the floor from the outside very well. Wright thought that this helped increase the elegance of the glasswork. He also had custom desks built so that they could fit neatly into the walls in some of the rooms. It's that attention to detail that I find even more impressive than the fact that the house is built over a waterfall. _smile.gif

When I was a kid, I really wanted to be an architect. It seemed like the best way to combine math, engineering, and art.

i know exactly what you mean. i started out as an architecture major before i switched to art. part of me still wants to be one, but i suppose not enough to keep me from changing majors.

i like falling water too. it was one of the first ones that got me more interested in houses and away from just buildings.

There is also a house on Lake Geneva that was inspired by Falling Water. I'll post the picture when I find it. Lake Geneva has some really cool houses/mansions.

edit:

You can't see it that well because of the trees, but I thought it was pretty cool.

I love architecture. I actually wanted to be architect when I was a kid but then I took a lot of drafting classes and got bored. I think it was the teacher..

I can't find a picture but I remember seeing this house that each floor was a room for someone and the actual living part of the house was completely seperate and it was all in the woods. Really neat.

But that's actually the outside courtyard. The bottom bit is the reflection of the building in the pond.

You HAVEEHAVEHAVHEHAVEH to look into Antonio (sometimes Antoni) Gaudi's works.. I saw his works in a documentary on some channel and it was AMAZING. He was a modernist inspired by more natural, organic forms (translating into moar parabolic curves) and I think his most noted works were in Barcelona and blahblablala. I tried looking for vids or pics to show and do him justice but I couldn't find any : ( Here's a vid anyway--

They coined him Gods Architect cause of his gigantic cathedral still in construction

The Guggenheim just celebrated its 50th birthday.

The Guggenheim At 50: A Legacy Spirals On Fifth

I love this description:
QUOTE
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Guggenheim earned many a dubious description upon its opening. Critics called it "inverted oatmeal dish," or a "hot cross bun." And in the face of such hostility, Wright defended his work.

"Somebody said the museum out here on Fifth Avenue looked like a washing machine," Wright said. "Well, I've heard a lot of that type of reaction, and I've always discounted it as worthless, and I think it is."

THE RAMP HOUSE

Recently created by Archivirus Architecture and Design, the Ramp House is a response to the client’s request for a “skateable habitat”.

According to architect Athanasia Psaraki, the Ramp House is a project which tries to reconsider and redefine the living space. The result of the client’s request is a curved form interior, which “set the whole house as well as the inhabitant’s life, into motion”.
