I'm trying to figure out how band profiles have links in their banners such as "ADD US,MESSAGE US"
can i get ome sort of clearity?

If you are talking about links on the images, they could have:
1. Imagemapped
2. Use a Clear DIV Overlay.
3. Or used a DIV with the part of the picture and overlayed it on the banner.

There's also something called slicing an image, where you basically divide sections of an image for different purposes. You can take the sliced images and place them inside a DIV. Since your image is sliced, you can make certain parts of it into links.
