Okay so I've been raised in the world of PC with slight affair with Mac, and in my graphics class we're totally on the Mac. So we're desigin' logos for each other, and I came up with this totally neat idea on paper but I cannot translate it on the PS CS3 w/ a Mac, but could most likely do it just fine or close on my PC using Pain Shop.
My idea is a "crescent" of the sun, with triangular rays, but I can't find how you turn the square/ rectangle into anything else. I've looked through the tutorials, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for. If anyone could be of assistance I'd appreciate.

Try using the pen tool! I don't really know how to explain it... but I'm sure there are tutorials here!
Edit: I found a
tutorial! I don't know how helpful it'll be, though...

Are you talking about the shape tool? As far as I know, the Mac and the PC are the same for this. You just click the Rectangle Shape Tool, hold, and wait for the other options to pop up. You can choose "Custom Shape Tool" and browse through the pre-existing ones (there are a LOT) and see if you can somehow manipulate your logo through some of those.
Or like Joanne said, use the pen tool, but that can be tricky if you're new to Photoshop, and especially if you're not getting the hang of the PC -> Mac transition.

Okay I think I'm getting somewhere. And I feel so embarassed because I swear I used to be a pro in PSP, but that was years ago on a PC.
Anyway thanks to you guys I figured out how to get the shape tool to form the eclipse, which I'm I'm going to use as a guide for my crescent, but I'd like it to have a border. See what I was doing was using two eclipse to make the crescent(one on top the other) then I wanted to erase the remains, but when I rasterize the layer so I can erase there is no border, it's just nothingness(because the filler color is white)

^ You have to "Stroke" the shape. After you create the shape, look for the shape layer on the Layers toolbar. On the bottom of the toolbar you should see something that looks like "fx". Click it, and choose Stroke. Then you can choose your border colour, thickness, etc. Rasterize and erase away!
