Actor Robert Downey Jr has in the past been applauded for his edgy roles.
But his latest may be a step too far - as the actor dons make-up to play a rather convincing looking black man in a new Hollywood film starring comic actor Ben Stiller.
In a still from film Tropic Thunder, Downey Jnr is sandwiched between Ben Stiller, and a blonde Jack Black.
With his afro hair and brown skin, he is virtually unrecognisable as the 42-year-old star of stage and screen.
Downey Jr plays a worthy Oscar-winning actor taking on a role originally written for a black actor, and rather than re-write the part, he goes method.
Clearing anticipating a backlash, Downey Jr told a US magazine: "If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago. If you don't do it right, we're going to hell."
YOU MOVE, YOU LOSE.
discuss.

i haven't decided yet if i find it offensive or not.
one argument would be that yes, there are a ton of talented black actors that could easily fill that role. on the other, i guess robert downey jr. and company wanted to 'challenge' themselves. that or they wanted the publicity.
either way, it's interesting ;o.

LOLOLOL WHY WOULD YOU BE OFFENDED?!

^ if that's a question towards me, i don't mean offensive to me, i mean offensive in general, as indicated by some people in the article. i don't know if i could empathize with them or not. pesonally though it wouldn't bother me.

Well clearly a black guy couldn't play the role...the movie is ABOUT a white guy who plays a black guy. In that case, there's no reason to be uppity about it.

I think Robert Downey Jr. playing an award-winning white-turned-black actor is BRILLIANT!
It reminds me of that South Park episode.

When I first saw this, it reminded me of an oldie that had a similar plot (white man turns into black) but personally, its not my type of movie.

I don't think its offensive at all. I mean, look how white chicks came out. :D

I don't think anyone could have played the role as good as Robert Downey Jr. in this movie. :D

did a quick search, but didn't come up with anything.
so, has anyone watched it yet? i saw it last night and i must say, it was pretty funny! robert downey jr. should get nominated for something with his performance, lol. at some parts, i was like wtf? but i was laughing throughout it all.
and tom cruise has a surprising role! i didn't know he was in the movie, but right when i heard his voice, i knew it was him through all that ridiculous hair/makeup!

I saw it over two weeks ago, on the night of comic-con (July 25th or something). They had a free advanced screening. It's HILARIOUS!!!! Although I did enjoy pineapple express, Tropic Thunder is a lot more funny. I might go see it again, but I will probably buy it once it gets out on DVD.
I didn't even know it was Tom Cruise until maybe halfway through the movie. He was hilarious! I've never seen Tom Cruise cuss so much or be so badass in being a boss onscreen before. Haha comb-over hair. I'm glad you watched it, Teesa! BTW RDJ's role is badass -- I mean, I don't know if any other white guy can put on blackface like that and actually play the part so well, lol.

This movie was hil-arious. This is coming from someone who didn't expect much out of it..
Tom Cruise's character tripped me out at the end. He was gettin' down with his bad self.
Robert was something else, too. Actually, all the characters in this movie were enjoyable.
I actually want to go see it again.

I saw it...it was alright. More dumb comedy, I saw this right after Pineapple Express. Haha, I was like...that's not Vietnamese...n oh it ended up being Chinese cause they got lost -_-. *shrugs it's weird when I watch movies that are like, of actors acting as actors...acting in a movie? -_-" It's not what I expected it to be.
I saw this last night and couldn't agree more. I found it weird to watch actors acting as actors. I expected it to be different.
The references to the 'retarded' people got old quickly in my opinion; it wasn't even funny most of the time.
I though Robert Downing Jr's role was genius. But of course I'm not black so I wouldn't find that offensive (if at all).
I wish I wouldn't have spent 10+ on the ticket, but now I know.
