First of all, you just made me break the number one rule of cB World Language Day. Shame on you guys.
Now,
QUOTE
That is I do not care. We are after a ENGLISH website. I do everything in English, so you have to do it. Thank you.
That was a PM I got from Dee. It was originally in German, but that's the rough English translation.
Ok, since when was it against the rules to use foreign languages? I don't even see it on the Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.
I was warned, allegedly for "spamming in The Lounge." Do you guys honestly think I'm low enough to just randomly spam in The Lounge? Everything was closed and deleted before everything could be explained.
Did you guys already forget the rule on deletion we JUST MADE YESTERDAY? ARE YOU DAFT?
If you would've actually read my topics, they were completely legit. My first one, which you mods should've read before you even thought about closing anything, was an explanation of cB World Language Day. My second was about heritage, which even had legit responses (I remember Joanne's specifically), but was deleted anyway.
You guys, this is disappointing.

Especially since we
just went over this.

What's wrong with making multiple topics if they're all legit? I've made a lot more consecutively in English.

What's taking you guys so long to respond? Do you guys always have to discuss things Backstage before doing anything?
I want to know every single mod that just handled cB World Language Day, and what exactly they did.
cB doesn't care about world culture.

If it was deleted, then how the hell would I have known it wasn't allowed? wtf kind of logic is that
And actually, foreign languages have been allowed before. Refer to the "culture" clubs like the Chinese club and stuff. Tina and I tried looking for it, but to no avail. I guess it got lost when Suzzette deleted everything.

Look, the point is, you can't just have a ban on foreign languages like that. And you especially can't go around warning and deleting topics by members who weren't even aware that English is the only language they could use because the rule's not even written down anywhere.

I don't think the problem was that you were warned for making foriegn language topics, its that you were spamming which is clearly written in your log anyway.
The problem with a foriegn langage topic, or post is how are other people supposed to understand really? How many registered users do you think speak arabic? maybe 1% not even.. so why make a topic saying something in arabic. sounds pointless, and spammy, which is against the community guidelines.
Mind the spelling errors.

Did it ever occur to you that perhaps the person who wrote "spamming" in my log made a mistake? The warn logs are not flawless, you know, nor are they very detailed. It's hard to go on something that just says "Spamming in The Lounge."
Just because it was written in my log doesn't mean it's fact.

I've been around here for 2 years and haven't seen any rules that say we must use English. How do I assume that I can only speak in English by observing that? Also, for the record, foreign languages have been used before, I've already said that.

Did most of you objecting Dee's actions actually see all the topics in the lounge last night? All the topics in Asian characters were truly obnoxious looking (no racial implications, thank you); when it was one it was fine, when there were two it was ok, when there were 15 that was more of an issue. And truthfully it would look like spam and only serve to isolate most of the community, because we have no real way of communicating in those topics even if we want to. You all know perfectly well that online translators really don't work very well. Removing those topics was not about asserting English's superiority over other languages, or anything like that, it just was actually what made the most sense at the time.
ps cB World Language Day was not created until after most of those topics were created

Before Suz deleted the forums, there was a topic in the Lounge for forum rules. It did state to not use any other languages or other language characters on the forums. But considering those are gone and I've seen people write in other languages I figured it wasn't that big of a deal anymore.
In all honestly, I just don't see it being done enough to completely exclude it from the forums. Perhaps we need some place where people can write what they want in other languages. I don't think there should be topics upon topics made in other languages, because then we could be separating the community more, which I don't think is needed. Perhaps we can use AC's idea of having a day where people can post openly in another language.
If anything, I believe almost all of you are OM's which means you can do almost whatever you want in the VIP lounge, so why not just do it in there?

Maybe we should do what Tung suggested in a former post which is to make a Forum based on other languages.

Juna can get the languages into CB

As Tomates said, its a win win situation. Don't like it, don't have to go into the sub forum.

Aug 8 2008, 11:33 AM
Let's think about this realistically. Is this foreign language trend really going to last long enough to justify its own forum? Subforums notably attract many fewer posters than other forums do, so chances are the appeal of a subforum geared towards typing in foreign languages won't outlast its novelty. Whereas being able to post other languages in the VIP lounge should serve as incentive to keep posting, which of course we want you to do. Make new topics, stimulate conversations in other topics, and if you actually have something to contribute you are welcome to bump older topics as well (hard to believe, but there was a time when people would make >200 posts a day). As it is, the VIP lounge has become something of a joke, so really just posting in other languages in there sounds like a much better idea. We just went through a whole ordeal concerning forum reorganization, so I doubt Jusun (lol) would appreciate adding another underused subforum.
When I studied for my Italian final by posting in Italian, I kept most of it to the VIP lounge and it was not an issue. Some people participated too. If foreign languages are too much clutter for the VIP lounge, which is rarely used anymore, it makes no sense to just put it somewhere else.

Nicki makes a good point in that a trend doesn't merit a subforum.
However, if people ARE desperate to post in whatever languages, whether they want to practice, or just have a change, I would point them to the Official [language] Threads which are still in the School forum. Chat there, and leave the rest of the forum in Egnlish.
Tomates

But obviously no one really knows about the Language stuff in the school section.
Therefore if theres a sub-forum that more people could potentially know about then it will settle more controversies?
