I think you guys seriously need to revert back to the old rule, where "spam" topics are never deleted. I don't even care if it's mass spam, maybe there's a legit topic you might have accidentally deleted in the whole mess. I even remember back when I was a mod, forums like The Lounge once being gloriously painted in red because of the remains of closed mass spam topics, because we had to close each one.

There isn't a point to keep spam present in the forums. I can see that if something gets accidently deleted, that's a problem. but reposting it rather than bitching about it is a better solution for everyone.

if a mod accidentally deleted a topic in the midst of a massive spam fest, they would just bring it back, right? it would be annoying and a waste of time to scroll through pages of deleted topics when there's really no point in them at all. just chill.

I don't know how topics really started getting deleted in the first place, to be honest. I'm still from the old school of modding (lol) where only ad topics get deleted.
I still say, though, if someone fills the first page of the lounge with spam, they get deleted after a day or so.

You're right, thing is, there's no telling whether or not the mods screwed up and deleted a legit topic. You mods are not infallible. Unless you guys make a separate "trash" forum for the public where we can look through closed topics, I don't think you guys should be straight deleting topics.

Stuff gets really confusing when you start deleting everything really quickly. Like, I was seriously wondering wtf happened to the recent topics in The Lounge, I even cleared my cache to make sure.
I still like Dani's idea of waiting for a while.

Mass spam ought to be deleted, it's irritating, inconvenient, and aesthetically displeasing.
I don't personally delete individual topics, but to be honest I don't think it makes much of a difference, given that it can be retreived if need be. Saying that deleting is 'abuse' is slightly hysterical, in my opinion. But I wouldn't mind seeing Dani's guideline followed if there are fewer than 5 or 6 topics or so.

I think it should be less than that. I mean, 15 topics is still a big chunk of the first page. Also, not everyone sees the same number of topics per page, so that could ge thairy as a definition.
Also, this would not apply to ads, either, correct?

There are two types of spam topics.
One is good spam. One is stupid spam.
i would delete the stupid spam compose of advertisement from a person who comes out of no where.
a "good" spam would be bashing, member hate, good discussion leads to spam, and drama.

NOTE ABOUT DELETING TOPICS (ADDED 08.07.08):
Topics/posts containing advertisements or porn can be deleted immediately.
Spam topics must be closed for at least 24 hours before deleting them. Use your judgment, if it's just one or a couple of topics, leave them closed. If it's several, you may delete them (after 24 hours). The only time it is acceptable to delete spam topics without waiting is if they are posted in bulk, as in 15 or more.

I understand the confusion but I've never been under the impression that even old bumped topics should be deleted. Closed perhaps but not deleted. If you ask me (not that anyone did lol), strict strict rules about bumping topics is pretty silly. The only time I've ever really taken issue with old topics being bumped is when the topic is entirely obsolete (for example, if someone is asking what they should wear for their 16th birthday party, which was two years ago and someone offering advice today. That just doesn't make any sense to me).
Like Dani, I was sort of brought up with the "don't delete unless it's ads" school of modding.
I like the 24 hour rule and have added it to the moderator guidelines (which need to be reviewed and updated a bit anyway).
