I was taking my Political Science 110B midterm (Sovereigns, Subjects & Modern State) yesterday. We had to write 2 complete essays in two hours, which should not be too difficult considering it was open-book, and we can write whatever notes we want inside the two books we had.
So while I'm taking this midterm, my boyfriend is sitting to my left, and this other Asian chick is sitting to his left. The whole time, she was hacking/coughing every 3-5 minutes and even though she covered her mouth while she coughed, she still opened her mouth really wide, so her coughing echoed through the classroom. In addition, the class only has 20-ish students, so it's really small! I kept losing my train of thought, but I didn't want to make a big scene out of it. I was so pissed while I was trying to figure out what quotes to use that I sat there and wasted 20 minutes while she was coughing like crazy.

What made me pretty pissed was that she decided to put a cough drop in her mouth after the first hour. I mean, I sympathize for her being sick, but I am sure a lot of the students were being restless.
Has anyone every been through this situation? Did any of you tell the person to stop coughing or to do something about it? Or maybe even move to a different seat?

It used to bug me when the teachers would assign seats and wouldn't let you move, so you were pretty much stuck. One time I ended up next to this guy who had serious sinus problems and apparently never knew there were tissues in the room. It's hard enough for me to pay attention in class, so when there's a sick person by me it makes it even worse.

Then I would have asked to sit outside because frankly, I would know that it would be bothersome to other people. Yes I have been sick before, but I wouldn't be hacking and coughing everywhere and I'd make sure to keep it as quiet as possible. Obviously you did not READ at all because my class was small (20-ish people) and there weren't any seats to move to.

Of course let's not forget the person bitching about getting a 24/25 because he thinks that the professor has a personal vendetta against him.

Obviously you didn't read what I wrote either. I never said to move to another seat.

I read what you wrote. I knew it was a small classroom.

Whoops I apologize I thought you were Prince again, that you two are the same person.

And of course I HAD to deal with it, I didn't tell her to STFU. All I'm saying is it would've been nice of her to move away or something. I'm sure the professor would've given her the opportunity.

^ Yea, especially when it echoes. D: I mean, I feel sorry for that girl for getting sick, but damn she was coughing pretty loudly. Fortunately I wasn't sitting next to her -- she was sitting next to my boyfriend, so he felt like she was coughing right into his ear. :[

f**k, I don't know what is worse...having a sick person next to you or a guy with REALLY REALLY bad breath.
In 10th grade, I was writing a Socials test and I was next to this guy who breathed through his mouth (WHY? WHY?). I could hear his breath moving the saliva around his mouth, that's how close I was. Upon each exhale, a new wave of rancid breath escaped his mouth, and entered my nostrils...OMG. SO DISGUSTING.
The worst thing about bad smells is making the decision of breathing through your mouth or your nose. If you breathe through your nose, you smell everything, but have the advantage of a filter. If you breathe through your mouth, you don't smell it, yet you're basically "eating" all of the disgusting molecules that the smell has. Huge dilemma.
