Jul 15 2008, 01:08 AM
you're really good.
here's a tip though to help you improve:
try curving your fingers; it makes it easier for you to play and allows you to show more emotion.

I hope you don't get offended because I want to give you some constructive criticism.
Like Sean said, you definitely need to curve your fingers or I don't see you improving, which would be a shame. Your movements are a LOT more restricted if you have rigid, flat fingers (and rigid elbows and shoulders, for that matter. But you should probably only worry about that if there are big leaps). You'll have a lot more control if you work on the physical mechanisms of piano playing.
From 0:26 onwards, the notes start to sound a little muddy (that could be the recording though), so maybe change the pedal a bit more often there. Also, throughout the piece in general, your tempo is a little off and the rhythm isn't too steady, and not in a rubato way.
I have to say that you're better than most people that claim they can play piano on YouTube. Right now I'm thinking of that bleached blonde lady with a muffin top who plays renditions of Rihanna and other artists on the piano, and she SUCKS LIKE SHIT and everyone thinks she's the piano god.
Keep at it! I liked the piece too btw, it's very relaxing.

Thank you guys, I don't mind constructive criticism, especially since I teach myself how to play. My friend who plays piano really good says I play good but I really need a lot of work. About the curving , I've tried to play like that but it seems akward to me so I always found myself playing flat fingered most of the time. Do you guys have any good videos I can follow where excellent curvature is shown ?
Also after :26 I had the petal sustained for a long time , I'm not sure if thats the reason why it sounds like that, here is a better version of someone playing it
http://youtube.com/watch?v=c-UMTWAIuo8&feature=relatedI skipped certain parts, even though I know how to play those parts I still need to practice because I tend to mess up at certain parts. Any suggestions for practicing a piece? Like try hands separate , segmental practice , etc.

Sorry for the huge post. I have diarrhea of the...keyboard?
Practice depends on what kind of piece you're playing. If the piece demands a lot of movement and complexity from both hands, you should practice each hand separately. When you get really good at playing it separately, try and play it together - this is where segmented practicing comes in handy. I usually practice in half-phrase segments, so usually in 4 bars. But if a bar is particularly hard, I might spend like 2 hours just repeating it over and over. Usually I just practice in segments though. You should never practice a piece from start to finish and call it a day...that's the most ineffective thing you can do.
KC, just try this...hold your palm flat against a table. Then, try to strike the table as hard as you can with your fourth (ring) finger. Can't do it very hard, right? You're also probably not hitting it with the tip of your finger.
Then, hold your palm so that it's in a curved position, like half of a tennis ball is under it. Your fingertips should be touching the surface of the table. Then, lift your fourth finger and strike the table as hard as you can with it, with your fingertip. You should find that it will be a lot easier to hit and with more strength. And it probably required less clenching of the bicep too (When I lifted the finger, I had it at least 2 inches above the table's surface).
Since most of the strength comes from your fingertips, it's a good idea to have very short nails when playing piano. I once got my fingernail caught in between two keys while playing a Bach fugue and f**k OW. Not fun.
Sean - that girl is awesome.

Well, I can't play keyboard THAT well so to me that was amazing.

It really does sweep the ladies off their feet, though. Just "curve your fingers" as my instructor would always tell me.

not bad, but try to bring out the melody a bit more and don't be afraid to use a little more rubato. pretty much, play it as if you were singing the melody.
impressive for sure though, for someone who taught himself to play.
