I never stayed at one, only heard about them.
I mean I guess they're small and cheap, but I can't think of anything you wouldn't already know.

Well, I was reading on Wikipedia and it was talking about they used to make their guests do chores lawl. Also, I didn't know if it was like an actual dorm where you're not connected to another room of say, a house, or something. Iono.

SD being... San Diego? Can't give you anything specific, but in general, they're fun, good way to meet random people and have a good time. Depends on how many people you're going with, really, because most places will let you book a room seperately if you caqn fill one, otherwise you can stay in a bigger dorm-style place with randomers.

Best just to do a search and call up the place; you can probably do quite a cheap room with 4 of you.

So I'm hoping. I've been searching and apparently many many hostels have been booked in advance. I've found a site (just now) that has it for $30/person/night. Hm.

That's prety good, but you can probably do better price-wise. It really depends on what you're planning on doing there... I mean, if you literally only want a place to crash when yu come in, go as cheap as possible and expect the bare minimum, but if you might wanna hang out there, pay a bit more and go for somewhere with a bar/lounge/whatever in it.
Also if it mentions food, check to make sure it's included in the price of the room, because really cheap places like to rip you off by offering breakfast at a really high mark up.

Bastards.
We're mostly looking for a place to sleep, I think most of our day will be spent out and about.

The foreign exchange student from Korea that stayed at my house would go to youth hostels. From what he told me, they are very cheap ($20 a night). Little privacy, don't pack too many valuable things, some of the people that stay there are really weird, you really should only be there to get some sleep, then GTFO and do what you planned on doing that day.

Hostels are just really cheap dorms, a step down from a motel. I know nothing of hostels in San Diego though. And hostels can sometimes be coed.

The hostels that I've visited or stayed at have been fairly decent. Not many amenities, but if you're just looking for a place to spend the night and nothing else, they're good. :)

Very good point. If you take an iPod or whatever, take it out with you in your pocket during the day, and try not to leave anything you care TOO much about behind... Less of an issue if you have your own room, obv.
