I've been giving it much thought, and I'm not quite sure yet.
For the people in college: Did you start any new hobbies/sports/organizations when you started college? Or did you just stick to the same stuff as in high school?
For the people not in college: Are you going to start any new activities when you start college or high school (if you're in middle school)?
I wanna get some new hobbies that's why I asked. I'm thinking about picking up bowling, billiards, swimming, piano, French, karate, and violin. Not sure which I'll go all the way with yet.

I want to pick up rock climbing or yoga or maybe photography in college, which is in a little over a year away...

Colleges are definitely great because there are so many resources in a concentrated space.

DO SWIMMING. I love swimming.
I have one year of high school left, and I'm pretty much going to try one new organization/activity. ASB. It's a leadership class.

I stopped doing sports but I'm going to pick up music again. That's pretty much it.

It's a lot harder to do extra things in college than it is in High School. At least around here it is. I'm thinking that by the time I get all my homework done and spend time with friends, I'm not going to have much time for anything else.

You'll undoubtedly take up drinking (if you haven't already).

^ Definitely worth learning to cook, but you may have to do that beforehand, depending on where you're living. For sure something you ought to do before you suddenly find yourself HAVING to know, anyway,
I started working for a music magazine on campus, as well as getting heavily involved in our school's charity program, which has been awesome. Considering doing some rock-climbing in the new year, as well, time permitting.

LOL no. My mom keeps bugging me to do shit, but I really don't have interest. I am a member of the Art History club, Colleges Against Cancer, IC Peace Club, and Do Anything Nice but I never go to meetings. I'm thinking of joining Amnesty International next semester and maybe actually going to some meetings, we'll see.

I'm on several of the radio station's staff, and next semester I'll start DJing. There's a lot involved with that if I actually do everything I signed up to do (I did for the most part), but that's pretty much all I did.

I was going to ask their webmasters to see if they allowed any students to help with the webpages for the school website. Some of the office websites look like sh**, such as fau.edu/housing

Well what year are you going to be Thomas? A lot of those things, like magazines and what not, kind of have seniority so you might end up doing bitch work for a few years before you can actually do something cool.

I'll be entering as a freshmen on monday, but in college, not high school wouldn't they rather see experience>senority?

(I know you're in college, just didn't know what year) Ehh it depends on how cliquey etc the organization is. It might be hard for you to get the position you deserve if others have been there longer and how close they are. My boyfriend was the online media editor last semester for our school paper and when he applied for media editor, he lost it to someone younger with less experience because a)they had been with the paper longer and b)they were good friends with the editor.

lol I'm not even in any organizations... Or well, I am but I hardly go to the meetings to even consider myself a member.
I went to 3 VSA (Vietnamese Student Association) meetings, 0 Pre-Dental Society meetings, and 3 UCSD Imports (Import Cars club) meetings, out of the 2 years I've attended college. And seriously, these meetings are weekly or bi-weekly. =X
If you really want to make a lot of friends, you can always join sororities/fraternities. Just bear in mind that such sisterhood/brotherhood will require a lot of time because you might have to attend quite a bit of their socials. But they're great networking groups.

It's like Rachel said, it depends. Most things will want to give important positions to people who have been with them for a while, partly because of knowing one another, and whatnot, but also because they want someone with a dedication to the organization. It's not good hiring someone who may have all the experience int he world, but lacks passion and is going to flake out after a couple of months, and there isn't really any way of knowing that for sure about a newbie.
Also kind of depends on how long the organization has been running. A fledgling or rapidly expanding thing, like the magazine I mentioned will be a lot more willing to take on new blood/ideas than would a longer runnign thing, like for instance a school paper.
Oh, and Rachel, get involved with Amnesty! Our group has f**king kicked ass this year... good times!

Uhm well when I start college full time this fall, I'm going to get into pottery or sewing/knitting. I use to sew and knit things but then I just didn't have the time for it, so I would like to get into to that. And I've always thought it was really cool to make your own things in pottery so that would be fun as well.
I'll be taking a yoga class more than likely and I'll start playing soccer again as well.

i'm going to be busy with cello/piano/various orchestral instruments. i don't think i'd want to be a professional musician that could only play a few instruments decently...
currently getting experience with djing so i'll probably do some of that too.
definitely will be working more on kungfu if the school has northern shaolin/performance and a decent instructor. tkd can kiss my ass.

Well, I stopped doing track and swimming since I wasn't good enough for the college level team.. but I got up the nerve to audition for chorale and LOVED it, joined a volunteer organization, residence life, and lots of other new clubs

I definitely started doing more since I started university, but that may partly be due to the fact that I never did anything in high school. A big factor in my being more adventurous stems from how much more freedom there is and how many more opportunities arise from meeting people from such an eclectic group. I haven't joined any clubs or organizations, some things I've tried so far include wake boarding, snowboarding (yeah, I'm slow on that, of this I am well aware), rock-climbing, and some other less athletic, more introverted self-identifying things.

Besides dance and theater I think I'm going to try kickboxing and ice climbing (how cool!). They have all sorts of crazy classes like that.
