Researchers in Melbourne found that by manipulating fat cells in mice they were able to speed up metabolism.

After removing a particular enzyme, scientists found the mice were able to eat the same amount as others but burn more calories and gain less weight.

The breakthrough could pave the way for fat-burning drugs and also help to combat diabetes.

The research found that mice in which the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) had been removed were, on average, 20% lighter than normal mice and had up to 60% less body fat.

I think that this may be a good breakthrough for this kind of research, although, not too promising words from the scientist. stubborn.gif

Awesome. The world shall be rid of fat rodents for good!

Seriously though, talking about taking pills to lose body fat makes me feel as though that's an easy way out for some people. You just know that if this hits the market that it's gonna be abused.

Must admit, I didn't read the study, so I don't really have a valid informed viewpoint. Unsure if they can even generalise their findings to humans yet... But:

This could be a double edged sword. You can only really create more fat cells, you can't get rid of the ones you have already. So this could be ideal to help people keep the weight off after a calorie deficit. But on the other hand, if it was made available to everyone, no questions asked, the consequences could be bad. People might overeat, just because they can. Although they wouldn't get fat, think of the damamge to their arteries and the possible increase in the cases of type 2 diabetes.

Good news for all those who want an all year round 6 pack though tongue.gif
