it's grey. gray is the american spin off spelling of the word.

My second grade teacher told us that she used "gray" because it sounds like the letter "A" and therefore should have "a" in the word, and that has always stuck with me.

i'm used to grey. also used to theatre.

why is it in debate? what's there to debate about? the preferred spelling of a word? it's like color and colour or theater and theatre.

I spell it both ways. Usually spell it gray. But I do spell it threatre, not theater.

I preferable spell it out as Gray. Although, at times, when I type the color out, I have the tendency to type "grey." lol.

I spell it gray. I've seen people of European descent spell it grey though, and Canadians. But by American standards, it's gray.

not really. there is no grammatical difference between grey and gray. as said in the other posts, grey evolved to its american counterpart, gray.

i'm used to grey though because most paints i've seen use "grey". so do most crayons, i believe. i just got used to it growing up.

I use grey, although according to my spell check its gray.

I spell it both ways, usually. But most of the time, its gray. I spell theatre with a re, even if firefox spell checks everything I write, and that's one of the words with a red line underneath it. xD

Gray is the way the firerox spell checker has it

i use gray because my computer doesnt like grey
neither do my teachers
but i tend to type relised and ...i forgot what the other one was. XD

I spell it 'grey'. Spelling it with an e just looks right to me.

I think it's a personal preference though... kind of like putting a comma before 'and' after listing a bunch of things.

I always put a comma before and when listing things. That's how I was taught, and then in middle school they tried making us all leave out the comma. I like it, though, that most people don't care too much.

anyways, i always use "gray." wanna know why? because in the fifth grade, on a spelling test, i thought it would be cool to spell it "grey" and the teacher marked me off a point. i had to speak to her about that and got the point back. yup.

Same here! I learned it that way in elementary school and I guess it just stuck. I had a discussion with some friends about it one time (weird, I know haha), and one of them pointed out that it seems like you're saying "and and" with the comma. But in my teacher for my Academic Reading & Writing class always puts commas in... so I guess I'll stick with her. =]

I spell it whatever way I want at the time but I guess I was wrong to do so because of what ersatz said.

Teesa, I'm sure I've had that happen to me before. When I was in second grade, I think, my teacher would always pronounce the "thee" and it would drive me nuts for some reason.

I guess the "and and" thing with placing a comma before and makes sense.

"I like oranges, apples, grapes, and peaches."

To me, that's like saying
"I like oranges [pause]
apples [pause]
grapes [pause]



[reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally long pause]




and peaches."

One of my elementary school teachers trained me to write it without a comma, I think, but I have no idea if it's one of those weird Canadian/not Canadian things. Like centre/center.

when i was in canada i was already used to spelling it colour, centre, theatre, etc. and then i go to the states and i want to spell it like that, but i'm a bit skeptical of getting points taken off or something.

have you guys ever gotten points taken off for it but convinced the teacher that it was correct?

It doesn't matter which way you spell it, I suppose its a matter of preference.

A way to think about is this:
Gray is a color.

Grey is a colour.

I think thats how it goes

I say grey but my teacher corrects me and says gray

Well, I live in Canada, so it's not an issue. Although I'm sure if I spelled it as "center", I wouldn't get any marks taken off. It would just be actual spelling mistakes like "alot" (how people even get this wrong...I have no idea) and "dissapointing" (this one makes me cringe!).

I've always used "centre" for the actual building, and "center" for an area of something (does that make sense?). I've never switched the spellings for the two different meanings. Again, I think it's a personal thing.

Most people say it's a fruit. =\ But if it were upto me, i'd say vegetable.
