My 25 years old sister just found out that she is diagnose with cystic fibrosis.

I like to know if it’s easily transmittable so I don’t have to worry about myself.

Moved to Health. I don't think this disease is contagious.

I had a relative who died of this. sad.gif And no, it`s not contagious. It`s hereditary.

i'm sorry to hear this but yes, it is hereditary.

It's recessive and common among caucasions.. i did a lot of research on this in the past for a research paper and a presentation.
just google it for more information.

go to the doctor for these questions, i'm sure they can answer it better than we can.

As stated before, it is a recessive hereditary disease. Your parents must both be carriers (if they do not have the disease themselves) meaning their alleles would be Aa, both of them.

Knowing this, You have a 1 in 4 chance of actually having the disease, a 1 in 4 chance of not having the disease nor being a carrier, and a 2 in 4 chance of being a carrier of the disease.

I'm so sorry about you're sister. She didn't know before? Don't people usually find out shortly after birth?

Becks59 pretty much said what I was going to say.. There's a 25% chance you might have it, so depending on what that percentage means to you, there you go.

Don't you guys learn these things in Biology? D:

You obviously know how to spell it. So how about putting it into Google instead of here?

I'm sorry to hear about your sister's diagnosis but it's not contagious. Since your sister has it, it means your parents are carriers. To be safe, you should ask your doctor to test you.

ah there you go. I forgot some of my biology.

I had the same question.. cystic fibrosis is pretty serious and doctors usually know right after they are born. I don't understand how it took 25 years for her doctors to realize it.

Sucks for you sister. She deffinately should've had better doctors in the past, esspecially since it's genetic. Wouldn't your parents know, and want to make sure she was okay? shrug.gif Go get checked to see if you're a carrier.
