HAVANA — Fidel Castro, bedridden for 19 months, on Tuesday gave up the almost unlimited power he has wielded in Cuba for nearly 50 years, but whether the surprise announcement represented a historic change or a symbolic political maneuver remained unclear.

For some reason that was a huge topic in my French class today. My French teacher is extremely interested in world affairs.

What do you guys think the brother will do? 'historic change or a symbolic political maneuver'?
Marlons
Wow, I thought the day would never come.

It is expected that his brother Raúl, 76, will be officially named president, and some experts consider him more pragmatic.

Raúl Castro has talked about bringing more accountability to government and possibly working to improve relations with the United States. But since taking over temporarily in the summer of 2006, he has largely operated in his brother’s shadow, and, except for facilitating huge investments by Canadian and European resort developers here, he has brought about little change.

i guess perhaps more of the same, but we'll see.

I heard about this on the news today. I wonder if his brother takes over if he'll be anything like him..
DoubleJ
Even though I don't like Castro, I will admit, that I respect him for his perseverance. He never backed down when the odds were against him, and his longevity speaks volumes. With that being said, he shouldn't have led his nation the way he did, and I think that now, he is paying the ultimate price.
karmakiller
I thought the only way he would give up his power is if he was dead. It's crazy, though, that even after he wasn't seen in public for X amount of days, weeks, and then months that he still held as much power as he did.

Probably.

Sadly.. I find the next guy to be worst. No where near better. The Cuban people need to revolt for their revolution.
RealTalk
He must be REALLY sick to be stepping down. I don't think I could see the country changing much under his brother.

Uhm... my post was edited. I didn't type that at all.

So who's the jackass that edited it?

No one knows that he's gonna be worst, if anything he'll be a lil better since supposedly he's gonna raise the income of the Cuban people, but the country is still staying Communistic.

LOL You were where? Here next to me by my computer? I'm tellin you right now... that's not what I posted.

I only know a lil about the new guy. Some people in Cuba are happier to have him, others believe their world is gonna end.
brooklyneast05
here as in i was watching this thread and read your reply when you posted it.

i think he maybe better, but it's not going to be a dramatic automatic change or anything.

Honestly, I really did not post that message...

Nope... sure isn't. Only thing I heard was a claim that he's gonna raise income. I have no sort of source to get info on this new guy. I just hope he gives his people a lil more freedom.
