I was watching project runway and thought about how cool it would be to have a design contest - but not for like... blends/vectors n shit. But for things that professionals actually design.
Challenges could be like:
Packaging - Come up with an idea for a product and create the packaging around it.
Corporate Identity Branding - Full corporate identity for a company that you have to make up. Business cards, Letterheads, Logo.
Celeb Site - Pick a celebrity or make one up and create their site/blog.
School Brochures - Create a tri-fold brochure for a make believe school.
Software Marketing/Packaging - Create cd cover and packaging and whatnot.
Book Cover - Create a book cover
Corporate Web Site - Create a web site for a high end corporate company.
Magazine - Create the magazine cover and table of contents page.
etc.
I realize some of these challenges may be a little over peoples heads but I would be totally willing to do some of these challenges myself before they start so I can post an example so the designers can see what we're looking for.

That'd be cool. Just one note for contests is that the design area has been pretty dead so whoever volunteers to be in it, need to be dedicated. Not to mention it shouldn't go on forever. (Just flaws from previous contests). Idea wise I think it's great and unique since most contents are just doing the basics.

Ooh this sounds like an awesome idea. As long as you get interested contestants, I think it'd be great.

I would definitely participate :D. I like this idea because aspiring graphic designers will become familiar with the type of projects they would have to deal with in the future.

That's pretty cool -- like real world design skills that new designers on the web might not have been exposed to yet. =]

I completely for this. I really would be dedicated, cause I've always wanted to get involved with professional shit. So as long as the contest doesn't last for too long, I'm all for it.

Excellent idea. I'd actually be challenging myself if I participated.

Would websites have to be coded as well?

This is a pretty nifty idea. Will probably fall prey to the general failings of cB contests, but yeah, neat.

I'm game. I've been interested in getting into some professional designs myself -- maybe add to the portfolio. :)
PRINT Magazine, FTW!
