I think most girls get there heartbroken mainly because think a guy likes them because they're simply smiling, and they overlook things. It's called BEING FRIENDLY. So yeah, he's probably just being friendly. Maybe it's just a coincidence that he's biting his lip. And since he is your friend, he's probably being like anyone else, and being friendly. And are you asking this question because you like him or something?

If he does it a lot, maybe he does like you and is thinking he should talk to you. Otherwise, it's nothing much.

Well it doesn't always have to mean anything if they do little things like bite their lip. Maybe it's just a habit that he does, and maybe when he smiles, he's just being friendly.
