I haven't really cared much for Lost in the last season. Even the finale wasn't enough to stir me. However, I must admit, when that premier ended I wanted to find a hole to hibernate in until next Thursday.

Me too. I think this season opener is far more compelling that last year's.
I'm going to rewatch then give some commentary.
As far as popularity goes, it's a difficult show to follow. There's definitely a strong and loyal fanbase though (myself included). Last year they just went into too many different directions, including the misdirected idea of adding two very unlikable characters.

I have to say that after the first string of eps, when they brought it back after the hiatus last year, they really got on point with the show and it had been as good as the first season for a while there.

I tried watching Lost and I just couldn't do it. It's just wild now. I really believe they just make stuff up as they go along. There will be no real conclusion to the show and if they do have one it'll be so confusing that no one will able to understand how everything is tied together.

Well according to the producers, yes they do have the story completely planned. And the show will be concluding in 3 seasons, so it's going to have to be finished and tied together.

I watched Lost up to season II; then promptly got bored when it became apparant that even the writers had no clue what was going on. The flashbacks were great to start with; but entire episodes just seemed wasted at times and it got on my nerves!

I agree with Rebecca. This is definitely not last season. This isn't even second season (although second season wasn't terrible). This is something new and, insofar as I can tell, something both wonderful and strange. The writers are getting their shit back together - it really seems like it. With a goal (supposedly they have the entire thing scheduled now), it seems like the show is moving a lot more smoothly, and I'm not upset at how shitty it is. Har har.
I'm excited for the next few episodes - very excited.

Ditto. It was like pulling teeth to get myself to watch Lost last year (which I did mostly out of some bizarre sense of loyalty). It didn't help that they killed one of my favorite characters in an early episode (Eko) and added the joke that was Nicki and Paulo. I've never been so glad to see people buried alive. Heh.
The new freighter people are fantastic and the divide between the two groups (Jack and Locke) is absolutely riveting. What makes the dynamic great is that it's not a clear black and white or good vs evil. We don't know exactly what's going on and I'm thrilled to be at the edge of my seat.

Yeah, I got confused a little. Whether it was a flashback or the future.
Like that one scene with Jack and Hugo in the basketball court. Hugo was saying that we should have stayed at the island and we have to go back. Jack told him we can't or whatever. So was this the future or something? It seemed like it.

This idea of a "constant" to stay alive during spontaneous time travel is f**king stupid. Just because we're dealing with a scientifically dubious idea, that doesn't mean it's alright to make up a completely incredulous solution to the nose bleed thing.

Eh, I don't know. I saw it as a grounding point. The idea of having an "anchor" doesn't seem all that far fetched to me in a plot line like this.
I could do without all the lovey duvey stuff though. More mad scientist less Penny.

Theres something about love that Lost does so well for me. I can't tell you how many times I've cried over Rose and Bernard. Oh wow.
Desmond is probably my favorite episode character. And the whole jumping through time thing was pretty wicked. Although I don't understand what happened to Desmond's conscious from 2004.
As for the anchor thing, yes it was a little out there, but it did add a dimension to it. Why he needs a common ground between two times I think is a bit off, but having an anchor to say, stay in one time space makes sense, especially if it's something or someone he's incredibly emotionally attached to.

I hated how last weeks episode was all about the constant, and this week's episode had not talk about it again. It was like a complete different story. That's sometimes annoying about Lost. They go on and off in intangibles. I wished they would just make a smooth storyline you know? Like Heroes. But damn, Lost is pretty good this year.
superstitious
Mar 9 2008, 05:57 PM
I missed last week's episode because I was too caught up in Freaks and Geeks. I'm actually going to see about watching it online in a bit, so I'll have more to say then.
I'm actually thinking that if I were to make a direct comparison of Heroes to Lost (this year), I would have to say that Lost is by far starting out better. It's really strange to even attempt to compare the two though.
I noticed that the recent episode is/was Juliet-centric, and I don't typically enjoy her episodes. Great actress, great character even, just not my favorite centric-episodes.

I'm liking Lost this season.
It's easier to follow than the last one.
The only problem is that they're showing some things in one show, and never completely telling us what it was about in the next.
Like what about that black shadowy figure they saw on the island?

Smokey the monster has been in the show since pretty much, day one. I can't remember if it was revealed that it was a security device or if someone asked if it was a security device.
I actually LOVE that the questions aren't answered from one episode to the next. I like the guess work, I like wondering. I'm glad you're enjoying this season so far though.
I did catch up on "The Other Woman" last night. Pretty good episode. I like creepy Ben for some reason. We ALL know that he had a thing for Juliet, but at least he outright said it (and did so in his lovable creepy way).

Sorry for the bump (it's been more than a few days though).
****Spoilers (even though the episode has already aired XD)****
I just had a chance to see Ji Yeon. Strange episode, to say the least. I know that Jin and Sun haven't had much in the way of screen time this year, but they are less than compelling right now. That's really dreadful too because she (Sun) certainly has a lot to work with. Gold star this episode goes to Juliet, who spilled the beans on the affair. What a bitch, right? Except no. Sun is a complete dumbass for wanting to join Locke. How many times has he said or done things to show that he has no intention of leaving? Ok, so she has a deathwish. Selfish winch.
Ok, so Sun isn't that bad. She's actually a character I like very much, I was just less than pleased with the direction she was going until the very very end.
Speaking of the end... anyone else (who has seen this, of course) think that whole weirdo Jin twist was, well, weird?
Ah and totally forgot to mention Michael. Man, can't wait to see more of him. That awkward introduction to Sayid and Des was HOT, to say the least.
Tung
Mar 17 2008, 06:35 PM
Yeah, they obviously wanted us to get confused between Jin's and Sun's life. They were showing Sun's flashforward, while showing Jin's flashbacks. Because in the episode, he said to the woman that he was only married for 2 months. They showed it together, trying to confused us, and it worked. I'm sad that Jin is going to die in the present, but I'm glad Sun is alive and the baby is well.
Can't wait for Thursday. Someone's apparently going to die. :O
superstitious
Mar 17 2008, 06:39 PM
Well, the thing about "dying", is that I don't think it's been made clear whether or not he's one of the assumed dead from the crash. I read a spoiler a LONG time ago that Jin was an Oceanic 6, but obviously that was a foiler. Bastards. haha
In fact, I have no idea whether or not the crash victims being fabricated is something the public finds out about or not, when the Oceanic 6 surface. Obviously not everyone died (in the public's eyes), but do they know that many more of them survived and are living it Gilligan style?
I can't wait for Thursday either. It seems about the right time that a death occurs. I can't remember which episode, but Eko died early on last year (which STILL bums me out to all hell).
Tung
Mar 17 2008, 06:43 PM
Yeah I know! Wasn't it Michael who apparently killed Eko? Damn bastard. Michael is pretty selfish. But I guess like Ben said, you won't imagine what a father would do for his son. I was bummed about Anna Louis dying. She was soo hot.
Oh and Rebecca, did you notice Juliet this season is wearing such revealing blouses showing off her big boobies? I thought it was quite hilarious considering they been on the island for like 2-3 months now, and she looks ridiculous good for someone who haven't had proper hygiene.
superstitious
Mar 17 2008, 06:55 PM
Oh no, Eko was killed by Smokey the Monster. I still don't know what's up with good ol' Smokey, although per the podcast, we'll be seeing more of it. Michael killed Ana Lucia and Libby. GOD Libby's death was sad. I love my Hurley and when he gets upset, I get upset. Quite irrational, but again, I adore my Hurley.
Speaking of Hurley, some guy on the podcast (a poster asking them a question) had actually counted how many "dudes" Hurley says in episode and had this whole analysis behind it. I SO have to find the transcript for that. So Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse coined the phrase "DPE" (dudes per episode). I love those guys. Oh wait I found it:
QUOTE
Hurley's 'dudes per episode' (DPE's) revealed. Season 1: 73, Season 2: 44, Season 3: 72
Yeah, Juliet has been sporting some cleavage lately. She did confess to Jack that she's the hots for him though, so maybe she's thinking some boobage will get his mind off of Kate (who is quite a bore this season). Juliet always looks good though. Remember the mud fight with her and Kate? HOT!

Mar 17 2008, 07:50 PM
I'm not a huge fan of Sun/Jin flashes, but this one was pretty good. A huge trick and twist at the end. And that does bring up the good question of, do the ones who don't make it off the island die? And will the Oceanic 6 make it back? Clearly Michael did and could. Although it seems that it was per Ben's request.
Predictions on this week's death?
superstitious
Mar 17 2008, 09:10 PM
I have NO idea.
I think you can rule the O6 out, except we still don't know who's in that coffin (from the last year's season finale) so that's a potential death. Jin is a possibility, so is Claire, since obviously Aaron is with Kate in the future. I'd say out the the original flighties, they'd be the most likely if the death is a main character death.
Any Other is fair game as far as I'm concerned, except for Ben, the French Woman (since I've heard that she is getting a flashback at one point, probably next season), and the daughter. Oh and that Alpert guy is coming back. I think his name is Alpert.
ThunderEvermore
Mar 17 2008, 10:49 PM
You think that maybe the person in the coffin is an Oceanic 6 that dies later on?
