It seems like a lot of regular members are shining more than official members when it comes to Member of the Month. I am suggesting the idea of anyone can win Member of the Month, and if my chance a regular member wins they will be handed over the official member status for winning the title.

What do you guys think of this?
pandora
Would the OM status be a permanent status? that would make the most sense. I like this idea.

we shoulda done this earlier
Insurmountable
Yes once they win the Member of the Month they have a permanent OM status _smile.gif It should have been done earlier I do agree, but at least were getting to it now! :D
divergent
I like that a lot of the members, who are not OM's are being nominated for MoTM, however, those are going to be the newer members, and sometimes, they will be putting out posts like crazy, and all of a sudden, can just stop all together, which sucks. Them having to be OM's kind of gives the community more of a chance to get to know them. Unless you change the criteria of MoTM.. I really can't see how regular members can be official members that easily.
Insurmountable
Well look at Ruth, shes been here for a while and is getting nominated like crazy and she only has like 800 posts.

There is MissHygienic and shes an excellent member and she only has around 200-500 posts and shes still active and has been nominated as well.

JC wasn't an official member yet he was a great member and made great quality posts.

yeah but this becomes unrealistic in a lot of cases, esp people who have had their account a while and not been active. when they come back, regaining ppd or 3500 posts is hard.
divergent
I don't know who Ruth is, sorry. I'm better with usernames.

I agree about MissHyienic I have followed her posts since I agreed with a few of her responses in the lounge.
divergent
I don't know about you JC but I wouldn't nominate an inactive member for MoTM.
Elba
I think this is a great idea.
Insurmountable
You wouldn't Thomas?
How about Jeanna? She was a regular member and left and came back and was a good member, very well liked and was active. Contributed quite a few topics in many different places around the Community center.

Ruth is revoltaire

i don't mean that, i mean people who come back from being inactive. i didn't use my account for a year, and then came back and was active. so i was annoyed at the fact that i couldn't be nominated because my ppd was low. yet someone could come and join and have a 28 ppd average a week later and get nominated over me.
Insurmountable
^Exactly,

Everything that is here has its flaws but we have to look at the positives. Personally I don't think some new member out of no where is going to win the MOTM..for one you have to be nominated and then the staff come together to state the final winner.
divergent
Oh, wow, she's been around for a while, Ruth, yeah, I never knew her actual name, didn't know she disclosed that on here... Some people haven't.

But I wouldn't nominate someone that is inactive, it wouldn't make sense.

I didn't know that Jeanna was active, left, and came back, I thought she was a whole new member completely. If that makes sense.

I don't see a problem with regular members getting the MoTM nomination and possibly being elected, however, I don't think that it's realistic that someone can make 80-90 posts and they're charisma and intellect charm everyone into voting for them when they don't know the first thing about that person, everyone opens up the more that you know them.

For example, when I first started here, of course no one knew me, so they all had to get to know me, within my first 800 posts I was nominated to be a staff member, and received the election. Now, people wouldn't even give me a second thought on that notion. Not saying that it is the same, but people can be interpreted in many different ways, and giving the title to a complete noob doesn't make sense to me.
divergent
I didn't completely understand what you meant JC, I do now. I would give someone the nomination if I thought they deserved it, just as much as a new member. I think that makes more sense. I hope.
pandora
yknow i just think this could be a nice perk for motm. lets look at it that way. i mean plenty of other people actually work their way to OM and then their activity drops a ton. i dont see a problem with this, personally.
divergent
Something funky going on with the site, it's saying that Trish is posting, but I don't see anything, unless she's just putting her own posts on mod preview. xD

QFT ^_^

Once you get to (is it 3000? 3500?) posts, sure, you're a perma OM. But until then, you don't have to climb to that 5 PPD to necessarily be a great member. I would rather see someone post thoughtfully then to be a quickie poster just to get the OM status. To me, the former clearly is more of a MoTM candidate.

All regular members should be lined up and executed by firing squad.

I like this idea.
S-Majere
Great idea. MOM being confined purely to OM's makes it difficult to nominate OM's over regularly active members sometimes.

Plus, we all know the post counts and PPD and all that were skewed after the Great Deletion.

So, what about past winners?
LoveToMySilas
I always thought that all members were legible to be MOTM. _unsure.gif I'm all for this idea. I mean, most of the MOTM nominees (sp?) aren't Official members.

Should be retro'd.

I wonder who thought of this idea a while ago... rolleyes.gif

But, yes, I think it's a good idea. But I also think it should be less permanent than those who have reached a certain number of posts. If their activity dies significantly, then the status should be removed.
Steven
WERE YOU ON STAFF MICHELLE?!
karmakiller
Yeah, I agree this is a good idea. When I first started CB and was learning about things, I thought it was for all members. I've never been an OM, hah.
Insurmountable
Well I'm sorry Michelle >_< I never knew you brought it up.. its just been brought up a bit and I would just make it finalized.. we'll start it next month _smile.gif
superstitious
Actually, I think this was brought up before Michelle was on staff. I just can't remember who brought it up, but if memory serves, someone was mentioning it not too long after MoTM was created.

Point is, it's a good idea, and if more than one person has thought about it and brought it up, then cool.

Very true. It's just finding the balance of what activity should be maintained.

See, I see PPD as a rather shitty way of maintaining OM status. Sure, it's not difficult when you're first getting there, but once you have posts in the thousands, if you take any break at all it's a sick process to get your PPD up. At least in my opinion it is.
superstitious
I'm sorry to bump this, but a new month approaches and I was wondering if a decision has been made.

The poll results are undeniably favorable in having regular members included.
NoSex
Yeah? Any word? I'm sort of interested in having my OM status back - I've been a long time supporter and contributor here and it's kind of disheartening to see that spammers and drive-by posters are reworded more than dedicated and thoughtful contributors.
Insurmountable
Well then Nate, if you win Member of the month you'll be an official member forever and ever!

Hold on, are you Nate? o_O or are you Jake

Oh well hmm I don't have a problem with previous winners being OM's. So I'll grant you the wish :D

I think it's a really great idea but doublehelix's response really tickled my fancy and I strongly agree with the response.
Insurmountable
I've never really seen someone that was really new win MotM, they've had chances but weren't actually the winners, they usually won the following month if they were still active. The current winner was nominated last month and she was really new then, but she didn't win. She won the following month after she was still continually active.
Steven
I won 20 days after I registered.

libertie
I don't see why not! I definitely think that if a regular member has proven that they've outshined the rest over that month, they absolutely should win.

And if they do, people would pretty much be like "Why isn't he/she an Official Member anyway?"

About the comment relating to newer members - the staff does make the final vote on Member of the Month, and if they win, it will certainly be because they deserve it, whether they remain active or not. Suzzette won SMOTM before, and even though what happened happened, she still deserved it when she won it.
SilentLaugh
has this happened, yet?

yea all the past winners of MotM are official members now.

and if there are some that are not OM then I'm checking back on all the winners and changing them.

this was a great idea. :]
