Some girl has contacted me saying she saw my layouts here on cb and really loved them. She ask me to make her a couple standard myspace layouts for a price. She claimed she bought layouts in the past very cheap around $20 for 15 layouts. She also wants resell rights. I offer to make her 25 layouts for $40.

I never use paypal before and never sold anything to people online before. I'm afraid she would resell my layouts for a higher price than she got them for.

I don't know anything about this so before I get to deep in this, I want to ask a couple questions.

I'm I charging the right price? Is it a good idea to give her resell rights? How much would you charge for 25 standard myspace layouts? Is I'm selling myself short? Do anyone know about how paypal work?

Any advice?

I don't know if this is in the right place so feel free to move.

Uh...I'm sorry, but the grammar in your post is... pinch.gif

Getting to the point, I think this girl might be making it up that she bought 20 layouts for $15. Most web designers wouldn't charge less than $1 for a layout. So yes, I think you're asking for too little money here.
brooklyneast05
i agree with cristy

25 layouts for 40 bucks is a ripping u off. in my opinion, that's a lot of work
freeflow
Standard as in what? Keeping the original colors and then just changin the background? Heck I never charge people so I wouldn't know but I'm just wondering.

I wouldn't even do it considering she wants to resell it.

Paypal you sign up and connect your bank account to it. Give people the email you used on the paypal they can send you money you can transfer it then to your bank account.
1angel3
How much should I charge?
brooklyneast05
well i guess it's like toya said. what are u going to do? 25 diff layouts or change up little things like color

25 different layouts. I'm just making standard myspace layouts, and all with a different backgrounds and colors.

IMO, i wouldn't do it. i mean, do you know this girl? and the fact that she wants rights to redistribute just gives me a weird feeling-that should be an auto no right there.

No I don't know her. You think I should charge every layout $5 a peace?
freeflow
You charge what you want. Either way you'll never know if she sells your layouts for more or else than you did. Thats all I think others and I are trying to say.

well ok, I might not do it then. I need the money, but I really don't have the time, besides I am the biggest procrastinator. Thanks everyone for the advice, and sorry about the grammar. I don't pay attention.
freeflow
Seriously I need money too but if you don't have the time don't force yourself to do it for that purpose. Maybe ask for her contact info and ask if she'll be willing to pay when your schedule lightens up. If she can't then you don't need to do business with her anyway. Putting that fact and all the others together.
IVIike
NEVER give her the resell rights, and the price is way too low I would charge 100$ or more see how high you can go eyebrowes.gif

25 layouts for $40 .. I think that's a lot of work. Unless you're a fastass worker and can make really professional layouts.
kisstheboy
you should charge wayyy more than just $40. I also agree that its too much work. If you're going to charge for 25 layouts, you should charge more.
1angel3
I should charge $100 dollars for 25 layouts, and I may charge more. Thanks for the advice everyone
pandora
100 dollars for 25 layouts is still grossly cheap.

i charge 100 an hour, and for flat prices at LEAST 300 per myspace layout.

For standard myspace layouts too? Wow.
dannyordinary
I think you are not charing her enough.

She is probably a person who runs a myspace layout site.
Or someone who is planning to do that.

1. She will earn money for the adds on her page.
2. She will earn click backs to her page from her little
tags on the layouts (the link).

So you should charge her more, or just not do it.
You should start your own layout site (did you ask
her why she needed 25 lyts?)
1angel3
^ No, I will.

I'm the "Girl" That wanted to buy your Layouts. You gave me the price. I didn't ask you for the Price. You might want to visit Myspacepros.com and get the real value of selling myspace layouts and graphics. I make and sell my own. It was just an offer but Thanks anyways. Some of you might want to make money There as well. :) I might just buy your Layouts. lol. Website Owners go there to buy Myspace Content. You all can have your opinions, I don't mind either. I don't rip anyone off it's not my style. I wouldn't want it to happen to me.
Just wanted to clear things up.

Visit Myspacepros.com

^ Yeah I know I made the price(I stated that already). But I wasn't sure I was giving the right price. So I needed a little advice on how I should go about this from other designers. I realize that was a lot of work. They all think I was charging too little.

Yeah I'll check that site out.

I'm sorry but who would buy 1 Myspace layout for 300.00? Never heard of that. If that was the case I'd be rich.

That's why I made this topic, to get to the bottom of things. I didn't know what I was doing so I ask for others opinion. Sorry for the misunderstanding too. I didn't know what resell rights meant.

Hey I may join that forum to sell some layouts. Thanks for telling me about it. I need the money.

That price is a bit high I think the 100 for 25 is fine if you're willing to work for that cheap

What kind of layouts does she want? If graphics by you are included then I would charge wayyy more, that is cheap even for regular layouts that just have a color splash. Tell her you won't accept unless she raises the price because its really unfair for her to use people like that.

Paypal is amazing, I have a business account and I have a debit card that I use all the time that I can just use all the money from my paypal account and if I don't have anything in my paypal account it takes money from the bank account that I have connected with it (You don't have to do that though).

When you give someone layouts and they pay you for them, then by all means you are handing them the rights to your stuff, most of the time. I wouldn't give her resell rights but I mean if your not that attached to the layouts then I wouldn't really care. Don't put much effort into them shrug.gif

Honestly in the past, I use to make standard really easy layouts. Go make PSDs and just throw some color and brushes and viola. Shove it as the background and then make the tables work. For 10 layouts I use to get around 60-70$..but I mean it only took me about a hour or two to make them all so I never really cared.

anyway, from the sounds of it. Shes ripping you off. Ask her for the people she re-sells too? if she'll give you that. And then uhhh tell her to raise the price and you'll do it.

I have another question. If I save a savings account do I need a routing number? I know only checking accounts have routing number but why paypal keep asking for one?
pandora
savings accounts have routing numbers. if you have a checking account in the same bank, use that routing number.

I have a savings account but where can I find the routing number. I don't think I have a routing number.

call your bank and ask. if you have wamu or bank of america, the have that information on their website.
S-Majere
Most commissioned graphics work will have (if the buyer is smart) some sort of disclaimer about once the layout is designed, the buyer themselves hold the copyright (or moral rights) to the design because they have purchased those rights from you. As the designer, I'm pretty sure you can implement a similar clause like this to stop your work from being re-published without permission. It gets messy here, I'll have to read up on it.

TBH, any commercial site that re-distributes or re-sells your creations should really be avoided.
