as you can see, you can barely read the update/BOTM and the links..any ideas how to fix that?

I would really say, change the background of the image to something else or I dunno what else ..

i'd go with changing the background, no writing is going to look good over that.

thanks! does it look better now? does anyone have any suggestions on changes i should make to the lyt?

Not really, you should get a lighter color of the border and use that as the background.
