QUOTE
After reading briefly from her mega-selling book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, on Friday night, Rowling took questions from an audience of 1,600 students. A 19-year-old from Colorado asked about the avuncular headmaster of Hogwarts School: 'Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself?'

The author replied: 'My truthful answer to you...I always thought of Dumbledore as gay.' The audience reportedly fell silent - then erupted into prolonged applause.

Rowling, 42, continued: 'Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald [a bad wizard he defeated long ago], and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent, but he met someone as brilliant as he was and, rather like Bellatrix, he was very drawn to this brilliant person and horribly, terribly let down by him.'

She added: 'Yeah, that's how I always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read-through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying, "I knew a girl once, whose hair..." I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, "Dumbledore's gay!"'

Oh well shrug.gif
missnh
haha... interesting. I never expected that. *shrug* but I suppose it was somewhat strange that no "lover" of his was ever mentioned openly.

I think someone should edit the topic title in case other people don't wanna know. Put a spoiler warning as well, although I know it wasn't really a part of the books...it could be devastating to some people!

God, remember when Jason made a "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE" topic? I just about killed him.
CowerPointyObjects
That makes no sense, Gigi...it isn't spoiling anything.
brooklyneast05
yea i never though of dumbledore as gay and i still won't. that's random to me.

Well, it is indirectly related to the plot. Have you read the article? Dumbledore's sexuality comes into play when we know that he's was in love with Gellert Grindelwald. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a bit of background knowledge, but people who haven't read DH might be ticked, since there's really not much mention of it in the earlier books.
CowerPointyObjects
But it's still not really relevant to anything. I mean, sure, if you know that it's the only way it makes any sense, but seriously, the book came out in JULY. It's now October. If someone hasn't read the book by now, they have no right to object to "spoilers," because time goes by and it becomes common knowledge. Anyone who considers themself enough of a fan to care should know to read as quickly as possible because the rest of the world isn't just going to wait around for them to catch up.
TheReasonWhy
Although I don't get the whole point, like the books already ended... JKR can say whatever she wants.. no offense but yeah.
tokyo-rose
Yeah, found out about this on Friday. I wasn't surprised since Dumbledore never has romantic relations with any women in all the books. I don't think Rowling should have made him gay, though... It's just more of a reason for institutions that ban her books to keep banning them.

yea agreed i think
she can go back and say whatever she wants to about anything in the book, it's already done with. not to say she's just recently made this up, but yea, just saying.

I really did not see that coming. I mean there was always something odd about him and they never mentioned if he found love or not but...hmm.
IVIike

I never thought about him being gay......

I thought he like was asexual or something..
IVIike
Me too, thats what this kid said in another article I read
Relentless
I sort of don't get why it's such big news...

Today during Math, my friends kept talking about it and I was like oh really? I guess it's true but I don't mind. It's not gonna change if another HP movie comes out.

They also mentioned that Gandolf in Lord Of The Rings is also gay too.
trulyandnever
Only makes the books even better & more interesting imo :P
demolished
seriously, we do not need to know that. it isnt a big deal in the story.
IVIike
I agree... damn i looked everywhere, but i didn't think of books XD.gif this can be merged if a people staff mod feel like it ermm.gif
immabwonderbread

I knew I read DUMBLEDORE IS GAY somewhere else on the boards, lol.

I agree she picked the perfect person, someone who everyone loved and made him a homosexual. Congrats to JK for sticking it to all those homophobes [sp?] clap.gif

Yeah. I was happier thinking that he just didn't like anyone. It really wasn't important at all, and now it really makes you wonder about all that extra time he spent with Harry... shifty.gif
chaneun
i think maybe JK rowling is just trying to get in the media spotlight again by causing all this fuss about dumbledore being a flamer.
more attention = book attention = more $
TheReasonWhy
I wonder is there anyone actually goes back and look through all the dumbledore parts and start analyzing it...

Gandalf is gay?! Wtf?! Total ripoff from LOTR. HP is becoming less original than I once thought.

Why is this such big news? Every news station I've seen has said something about it. Here's a newsflash: 7/8 of the world population doesn't give a shit.

she's just making stuff up now to take away from her crappy ending

Hmm, I really doubt the number's that high. Harry Potter is really popular. And as far as the world population goes, it has international fame too, and the parts in which it isn't popular won't be broadcasting the news.

The ending wasn't bad, though. The epilogue was stupid, but it ended well.
revka
^ yeah, i found the epilogue to be really corny and rushed

It was just to make a point. We care more about some fictional character being gay, rather than the issues in our country and even outside of our country.

True, but fans really should be making fuss over gay Albus. I still think that it explains why he was so passionate about running with a guy who had a character/personality he wouldn't have normally condoned.

The epilogue was dreadful. DREADFUL.

I also really liked it better when I thought he was asexual and just no one was good enough for him. This is kind of weird to me...maybe just cause it's difficult for me to think of an old man as gay. I don't know...it's just difficult.

Same can be said about people like Hilton, Lohan, Spears, etc. Some care more about celebrities than national or international news.

I don't mind the fuss over this because of what Rowling did for world literacy.

Ian McKellen (Gandalf) is gay. I think he's sexy as hell too.

I know what you mean though, Spencer. If folks put half the effort they put into fiction into real news (well, as much as America produces *complete real news*, but that's a totally different rant) then as a whole we'd be a hell of a lot more informed.

Oh and I wouldn't have minded a little Tonks/Lupin/Sirius action, but I digress. whistling.gif XD

This one kid got so mad at me when I told him this that he flicked me off and cussed me out.

It was quite amusing.
