Can you give blood if you have anemia? My doctor thinks I either have that or this really rare rapid heart rate disease. I went to get my blood tested, but they haven't called me about the results yet, so I'm not sure if I'm really anemic. Either way, I have an EXTREMELY rapid heart rate -- at rest, it's around 96 beats per minute. But my school is having a blood drive next week and if you do it, you get these really nice flannel pants. I really want the pants!
Are any of you guys anemic? Know anyone who is? Can they give blood?

Actually, there's a blood drive this week so my RA was encouraging us to give and explaining all the misconceptions people had about the restrictions. As far as anemia is concerned, it's not really recommended, but if you eat a lot of iron filled foods the day before you should be okay. I'd consider her a pretty trustworthy source, too. I'd google and double check, but I'm supposed to be writing a history paper right now.

I used to be anemic and I couldn't give blood. They usually don't want to give blood with low iron levels to someone who's sick. I wasn't horribly anemic, either.
There was a point when I was younger that I had to get my blood taken every 3 months, because they wanted to keep tabs on my anemia. Anemia's actually a lot more common than it should be.

It's really common in women in general, which is why they don't necessarily turn you down.

Nevermind! I don't have anemia -- but I think I have ventricular tachycardia. My doctor said no to the blood-giving.

Question: Can I give blood if I am anemic?
Answer: A trained technician will test a drop of your blood before you donate. If you are anemic, you will not be permitted to donate on that day. However, in healthy individuals, anemia is not a permanent condition. If you were told during a previous donation you were anemic, it does not necessarily mean that you cannot give blood now.
